This could be a great thread if you were a little more detailed in your question. There are a few different methods that could be interpeted as competition that certain programs utilize.

Can you elaborate?

How about the reverse?

I work for a PPC SE and had a mainstream Advertiser ask if we could remove some of his affiliates that were competing with him in the listings.

The answer, "uhhh, no"

It's a free market. If you fear competition then get out.

Many programs are doing it, sapphic cash, bangbros just to name a few that I am certain of. It doesn't upset me, it only shows it's every webmaster for himself in this industry.

Im am WAY MORE UPSET if programs create a zillion free hosted galleries out of a handfull of unique content by creating 8 different templates for each gallery + using 10 different scenes from the same video or shoot, and by doing this they create 80 FHG's out of 1 unique piece of content.
This results that we the affiliates have to go over 80 galleries to end up with 1 decent gallery to promote wich is a true waste of time.
Good thing a program like juggcash (also doing this above) at least offers a way to filter the templates through it's affiliate system so you get clean lists with unique content.

some mainstream companies actually forbid their affiliates from competing with them.

I would be concerned if a program wasn't promoting their own stuff.

a) How do they know what works and what doesn't if they don't do it themselves? They have to know in order to get it right and help their affiliates get it right.
b) How are they supplimenting the income to push those "100% revshare" or "$100 days" promotions without shaving if they don't have their own income happening?
c) I'm really not interested in helping someone who won't help themselves. If they don't think their own stuff is worth getting out there, why would I?

Absolutely.

A big-time operator should decide whether they are a sponsor or a site operator. Sponsors who funnel ALL their efforts to help their affiliates make sales build the greatest loyalty.

Sponsors who shamelessly up/cross sell 'free members' for programs the affiliate does not get credit for have only fairweather relationships (and are the first to be swapped out with competition).

Why shouldn't program owners promote their own stuff? What kind of stupid question is that? You think affiliate programs are created for affiliates? They are create solely for the purpose of squeezing more $$ out of existing sites/products...

Because the affiliate/sponsor program concept has evolved since 1996.

To run a proper afiliate program (which converts and keeps converting and nets $$$ for affiliates on an ongoing basis) is a full time and full resource challenge. I'm not talking about the peewee 'sponsors' (like me) who try to supplement their sales with affiliates who are casually willing to shoot some extra (niche) traffic for some bucks.

10 years ago, all adult biz webmasters had their own dedicated boxes (or shared among them) and they were paysite operators enjoying all the headaches (like processors crapping out, stealing, etc).

When the affiliate (rev-share) concept started getting out there, adult webmasters had more choices - operate a paysite or promote paysites.

With FHGs and free sponsor hosting, being a full-on dedicated affiliate became more fiscally feasible.

But then came the (sponsor) shaving, and skimming and other sleazy tricks which made affiliates more wary. Saavy sponsors stepped up to the plate with more (conceptually) open, transparent programs (using reputable billing processors) and demonstrating that they were working to help the affiliate make money.

Today, there are professional affiliates and there are dedicated (affiliate-supportive) sponsors, and there is all the residue from last 10 years.

2257 put the scare in lots of smaller operators who seem to be content to let the bigger guys handle the hosting, legal, and content procurement issues while they focused on building traffic and targeting it to appropriate programs.

Things have changed and there will be a settling of these respective roles.
