I had this board http://www.bakerpools.net/collection/nataspanther.JPG after it got stolen I stopped skating and become a computergeek and gained like 700lbs.
|
I was a bit too young in the 80's, but I did pick it up in the 90's. Got sponsored by a local shop actually. Wish I didn't quit! Damn computers!
|
dam i miss the 80's :(
|
My first "board" was literally a board. A piece of plywood with 2 blocks of 2x4. We'd take apart our steel-wheel skates that were made to clamp onto a stiff shoe, and nail them to the blocks. There ya go, circa 1970 skateboard.

OK... answer these questions:
1) How many ramps did you build? (launch, half pipe... whatever) 2) About how many decks did you break? 3) What was your favorite set up? (decks, wheels, trucks, bearings...) 4) Were you ever arrested for skating? 5) Serious injuries? 6) Were you sponsored, amateur or pro? 7) What was the raddest trick you could do? 8) What was the one trick you never was able to do? 9) Do skating rule your life? 10) Do you still skate? |

I had this deck for 3 days. Snapped in in half while landing a huge wall ride (on to the wall from a large launch ramp). |
off the wall...

MINE: 1) Fuck. I built 4 large half pipes and countless lauch ramps. 2) I was a hard street skater. Lots of hard landings and lots of jumps from ramps. I don't remember the exact number, but I would have to say 100. 3) My favorite was a Sam Cunningham deck (Blockhead). I had about 20 of them. German bearings, Independent trucks with gring kind bolts... Wheels... shit I don't recall what was my fav, but I used them all and coned them out from slides. I liked softer wheels cause they were better for sreet and gripping onto things. NO rail guards EVER... and I always did crazy shit with my grip tape. 4) Yes. Once for skating in a pool, and 3 times for skating in places that did not allow us. Business parks mostly. 5) Broke a few fingers. Dislocated some things and the injury that stopped it all was a hyper-extended knee. OUCH. I could not walk for 2 months and after that I lost my balls to go big. 6) At the time of my injury, I was talking to Blackhead. I had a local skate shop sponorship though. Won a few contests. 7) I was a wall riding nut and ollie freak. I could do HUGE ollies and HUGE wall rides, from any side. The trick that would probably blow the most minds was a switch stance verticle wall ride. I could either ride to the wall and pump up it like a normal ollie wall ride (but straight at it), pump up about a foot or so and switch stance on the wall and come down backwards. Could also do it with ramps against the wall. Sick shit. My thing with ollies is that I would go over or onto just about anything. Onto picknic tables, over benches, onto hoods of cars. Then because I could wall ride so well if I came to a small wall that I could not ollie onto, I would wall ride it right up and roll to the top, and onto it. I could handle vert / walls very well and could so some sick shit on them. 8) I could never do a real handplant on a half pipe. I could never land it. Don't know why. On the ground, I could do them all and some insane variations of them, but on vert... forget it. 9) For many years there was nothing else. Every waking moment I could spend on my board was on my board. Even when it was raining I would stay in my garage and practice kick flips. 10) I posted above about the last time on my board. Sadly I do not, however I STILL to this very day get excited when I see a spot I could skate. A rail, a curve, bump, wall... anything that I would have skated, I still have that feeling inside that I want to skate it and go big. But I would bust my ass I'm sure. |

2) Broke more out of anger than actually breaking it in process of a trick. 3) Girl deck, Venture/Royal trucks, any 52mm wheels, bearings didnt matter much. 4) Arrested... no. Got a ticket once though for about $100. 5) Not too many serious ones, the usual banging of the shins, few groin shots. 6) Sponsored by a local shop called Active 7) Raddest trick.. hmm. I was more of a technical skater, love grind tricks. I used to do things like: Inward Heel flip to switch 5-0, 180 out. Crook grind shove it out, etc etc 8) Couldn't get hardflips down too well. 9) It ruled it at the time. |
We should have a webmaster skate get together at one of the shows. lol
Everyone bring their boards and pain pills. |

Remember the big "Skateboarding is not a crime" movement, as cities around the country were trying to ban skateboarding in public places, and on sidewalks etc? |

1) I've built several launch ramps, one quarter pipe and two half pipes. I also built a couple ollie boxes and miscellaneous things. 2) Honestly, I never broke any decks. I was pretty smooth back then and never really landed hard enough to crack a deck. 3) I used to be a big fan of Caballero's board... that is until I got sponsored. When I did, I used the company's decks and trucks. I can't remember the wheels, but I think they were slimeballs (although I can't guarantee it). 4) I was never arrested but did my fair share of running. All the good spots seemed to be on private property so we'd have to sneak under gates or over fences to do our thing... that, or just skate late at night. 5) My most serious injury from skating happened at a contest. In between the different groups, they would have what was called "Free Skate" where everyone just skates until the next group starts up. Well, I was getting ready to slide the handrail they had there and the dude in front of me fell and didn't get his board in time so when I landed, his board came up and smashed me on my knee. I went to the hospital and it was sprained and I was on crutches for maybe a week. Even afterwards, it took a while to fully heal. That shit hurt like you can't imagine. 6) I was sponsored, but still an amateur because I was never paid. I was just given free gear like decks, trucks, clothes, accessories, etc... 7) The raddest trick... that's a tough one. I remember doing frontside rail slides down handrails. That's when they were first hot and not many people were doing them frontside. I also had some pretty sweet style on the launch ramp. I remember being able to do different 360 airs (like judo or madonna's). 8) I could never do an Ollie Impossible. 9) Back in the day, yeah... skating ruled my life big time. I invested a good part of my younger life involved in the whole lifestyle of it. Those were some of the best times I ever had. 10) No I do not still skate. I would still love to, but I'm way too heavy and just not fluid enough to do it. If I had to, I could probably still get on a board and bust an ollie kickflip, but it would be sketchy as hell and there's no guarantee that I'd land it. - PornAddict |

I was pretty hateful when I was a teenager. I hate the skateboarder clicques in school because they're always at my face and they always seem to be where they weren't supposed to be.
But I really dug these group of roller chicks who came to school with rollerskates, wearing miniskirts that let you peak on the hot pants that they were wearing (sorry no panties) underneath. One time, one skatergirl came to me with a piece of tuna sandwich. Since I was unpopular in school, I smelled a prank. I was about to eavde her when this skater dude came around at my back and pushed me on my side. I didn't know what hit me when I found myself going down on the concrete floor. My mind was racing as I hit the pavement on my face. I broke my nose and stars had appeared in my sight. But my hands were quick. My left hand slid into my satchel bag and grasped my cutter. In one fell swoop, I slashed the first figure who approached me. To my surprise, it was the skater girl with the sandwich. I had lacerated the back of her heel so deeply, blood gushed like a stream. She yelped and bawled out so loudly that the prinicpal came running. He swore like a sailor and put me on detention for three hours. Soon after, the skaters and skateboarders stopped harassing me. They never laid a finger on me afterwards. I just love sharp things, don't you? |
what a great thread.
makes me want to go out and put my wheel scuff marks all over something. |

Ahhh I love that board! Dang, like I said in the first post, these things are almost like artwork...... Tempted just to buy to display somewhere. I mean the generations before us collected Baseball Cards as memobrila for the special years of youth, for us I think Skateboards were that special moment.. Some of these decks are not far from being artwork. |
Over here in Portland at the Homegrown Video Studios (portland branch) I know Tom has some kick ass old boards.
They display them like a museum of sorts.. They were more freestyle boards though as I recall. The new generation. But it was still cool. Like I said, these decks are like artwork. |
Madrid Flys Baby!!
Not sure how that name just poped into my head, but I had those too! |

Exactly..... No skate parks back then.. Only could dream about em. They didnt exist! Up here in Oregon and Washington anyway.. Cali yeah.. But not here.. We could only dream... Now the city pays for em!!! They are all over!! Looks like the skateboard kids from the 80's grew up! And work for city planning! Bow to the Power! I love it! |

WTF....... Not sure where you lived man. But the skaters were the losers here. They werent the rich kids.. They were the mid to lower kids.. I couldnt afford the Brand name Converse growing up and had Volume Shoe source generics. Wasnt till I started getting older when I could mow lawns and shit for cash that I could affrod the skate shit. I dont recall the rich preppy kids skating?? Maybe towards the end of the fad.. But damn dude. WTF! |
Internext Vegas 2007..
A booth should have a Half Pipe. Have us old fat dudes try hitting it up like we did 20 years ago. Now that would be entertaining and fun to watch. |

Strange......... I remember the SanaCruz thing.. I had the stickers and shit. But I dont recall that board? Local thing? |
When I was about seven years old my family was living in Flint Mich. My older sister was a big fan of the Beach Boys and had all their records which she listened to constantly. I became interested in the whole california beach bum lifestyle and dreamed about surfing like I had seen in those Elvis, Gidget and Ride the Wild surf movies.
One day we were at the local five and dime store and I saw one of those skateboard things I'd seen on tv and I begged my mom to buy it for me. It was made of white pine and had two big green bare feet painted on the deck and it said hang ten. The wheels were metal and the trucks had little or no adjustment. I took it home and started to ride it on the sidewalk in front of my house. Soon all the neighborhood kids gathered around and we all took turns trying to make the little turn at the bottom of this little hill. NOBODY could make the turn as the metal wheels wouldn't grip and you would slide into the grass. The other problem was the wheels had a very hard time going over the seams in the sidewalk and it would often catch, sending you over the front and flat on your face. Catch a little rock under the wheel and you get launched. We gave up trying to make the turn and just cruised around sidewalk surfing. The big trick back then was walking the board lol. That was the first time I stepped on a skateboard and the year was 1965. A lot of things have changed since then but the stoke remains the same |

Alot of gear and clothing got messed up so i ended up getting all that gear. :1orglaugh Thanks for the flashback :) |

Most of these boards I know from the design. You could blur out the names and I bet almost ALL OF US could say what it was.
Pretty funny. |
