this thread brings back some good memories of the 80's. I had 2 boards back in the day, and I still have them. I remember learning to skateboard when I was around 3 or 4, before I could even ride a bike. good times, good times.
|
I had a Sims board, black kryptonics, wide independents, vans and no skid blocks....ages ago..
now at 42yo I still can do most of the tricks ;-) Skaters rule! |
I had them all at one time or another... but my fav was a Blockhead Sam Cunningham deck because it had a fat nose and a little kick in the tail that was great for some extra control.
I was a SERIOUS skater for a long time. |

Yepp. That was late 80's for me..... In fact out of all my boards, the Blockhead is the only one I still have sitting in the basement at my mom's place. I believe its the Jim Gray Blockhead... I liked it. |
was more like the early 90s for me but here is the board i had and still have today

BTW... last year I went out back with the board when I heard some tail pops from some kids in the parking lot behind me house.
I had not been on my board in YEARS. Rolled up, the kids gave me "that look" like I did not belong. A few kickflips later along with some old school smooth as butter slappy smith grinds on a curb, I had their respect. The took me to some spots, I think just to see what this old timer had in him. Frontside and backside wall rides. Nailed them. Several kick flip tricks, airwalk, tail slides... perfect. Then I saw one of the kids ollie up and do some sort of a shove-it nose slide down a hand rail about 5 steps long. No problem I though, I used to slide down handrails in my sleep. I rolled up to it, POP... bailed. Try #2... rolled up, POP... bailed. I was thinking for sure I was never going to feel this incredible rush again. Roll up, POP... smooth as butter. Now I'm one of the kids. Still with some old school tricks, and some were a bit sketchy, but I was able to hang onto most. After an hour or so I was feeling good, almost like old times but a little more winded and my shins were starting to hurt. I thought I would nail a frontside rail slide and call it a day. Rolled up, POP... onto the rail... by board just stopped. I feel backwards and BUSTED MY FUCKING ASS harder than I have ever busted my ass before. I don't remember the pavement being so hard. It really fucking hurt. It knocked the wind out of me and I was on the groud for about 20 minutes while the kids were sure I broke something. Nothing was broken but my pride. I limped home, in too much pain to even skate. That was the last time I got on a skateboard. |
Man you guys had it made.
I was riding back in the 70s and back then you didn't have the equipment choices you did in the 80s and beyond. You know where we got our boards, we made them ourselves in shop class. Urethane wheels and tracker trucks came along and changed everything. I think cadillac wheels were the first to come out. All that new grip changed the way we could ride. Then came the skate parks. I can remember going to the " Paved Wave " in Cocoa Fl. and riding the place in bare feet, no pads or helmet. It's come a looooong way since then but it was still fun back in the day. I've got some pics I just need to dig them up first. |

Its almost like the old boxer, the ex champ, the master of the ring stepping back in to show the kids he still has it. To show that he was once the man, while those kids were in diapers you were ripping it up.. Show flashes of brillance, then take a fall.. A hard fall. But its the ego that is hurt the most. Dude, ya gotta get back out there sometime. Try to ease into it! |

Many of the big company names from the 80's were skaters from the 70's. |

Here is a pic of me at the " Paved Wave " skate park in Cocoa Fl. I'd say this was about 1977. I made the board myself and it's got cadillac wheels. Around this time the new thing were those plastic boards that could flex which later led to the stronger laminate boards.
Paved wave was one of if not the first skate park in Florida and people came from all over to skate there. It had a high concrete ramp that you used to drop into a big bowl which I'm at here. Then it turned into a series of left and right banks and then a flat area which ended at the foot of the stairs to go up to the ramp again. You can see by the pictures that no protection was required and I don't think they made much for skating back then anyways. Also notice there is no coping on the top of the bowl as nobody has even thought about using the lip yet. That came about later when everyone started skating in empty swimming pools and discovered the use of the coping. It's pretty amazing to think back to those times and how we thought we were on the cutting edge and then to watch the recent Xgames and see just how far it's come. All I can say now is I'm really starting to feel old :( http://www.julie-clarke.com/public_h...ages/skate.jpg |

Yea that was my favorite board that and Mike McGill's.. I used to have my own half pipe in my back yard and the whole nine yards. A friend of mine had Mark Lake's metal half pipe in his back yard. That thing was insane Lake skateboard company was based in my home town I dunno if they are still around or not though. I dislocated my elbow showing off for some girls on a ramp and had to have two surgery's on it.. That ended my skating days.:( |

Hey man where was that at in Cocoa? I grew up in Melbourne. |

And no equipment. I still carry scars from my handful of legendary wipeouts on cement. Good times. Oh, and "Lords of dogtown" was a good watch. :D |
I Think the paved wave was on SR520 in Cocoa or maybe merritt island. If I remember it was only open a few years and then closed because of fear of lawsuits and back then nobody would insure something like that. I could be wrong though. It's been a long time.

Ahh ok yea that's what sucked about skating when I was growing up in that area.. There were no parks and no place you could skate publicly. We used to have to build our own ramps in the woods or behind our houses. That or go skate behind some shopping mall on their loading docks or something like that. A skate park would have been a dream back then. |
