I'm doing awesome with mainstream mobile marketing, definitely look into SMS aggregators if you're looking to offer something similiar. There's quite a few in the USA and a lot of them offer recurring memberships but be prepared for a 40-60% fee from the telco's.

Its a pretty good business in the UK and Europe, downside is that the mobile operators take the Lion's share of the revenue.
Tip: If you do get into, make sure you get your own short code number, a lot of the companies offer shared short code numbers, so for example if you send 'lens' to 55566 they get a picture of you. But if they make a typo and send 'len' instead you don't get paid, but the company with the short code does.
and that works in one country? 10? always the fun side of the sms biz as nothing works worldwide and you're left with 20% of the cake if you're lucky enough to cash out after the 6 month holding period...
hit me up, we have been doing this since 2003 in Europe, company is Mobile Interactive. Note that adult and text messaging in the USA is a NO GO, the rest of the world however it's party time :-)
Be sure whoever you choose can guarantee your payments as it is not funny paying your webmasters for months without getting paid yourself
Depending on who you go with, you can expect to wait up to 90 days EOM from the purchase before you get paid.
I would suggest you use "voice dialer" instead where you can get your payments guaranteed, and only use SMS if you find someone that will guarantee your payments, IE: paying weekly

Highly recommended LENS - Blue Eyes is a genius with this
3. Purchase a shortcode and get it approved by mobile carriers.
From many of the posts, people are familiar with PSMS in the US and at a 10,000 foot level, these items are pretty accurate. However, to make $$ in this business and not hemorrhage away all profits, there is significant technology and processes required:
1. Content formatting and rendering for various carriers and handsets
2. Message/content delivery and scripting engines
3. Stored value and subscription administration
4. Premium SMS transaction reconciliation, client reporting, and payout
accounting
5. Risk management including white list/black lists, velocity checks, etc.
6. Integrating your SMS platform with monitoring and implementing actions relative to carrier response codes for PSMS
7. Understand and work within carrier compliance guidelines and the Mobile Marketing Associations ?Code of Conduct?!
8. Shortcode carrier applications, implementation, provisioning and administration
It can all certainly be accomplished as we have built it ourselves?however, it has taken years and an enormous amount of capital, resources and hard-knocks experience. And we have a background in technology and transaction processing?

Well, what you do is register a domain like GoTxtYourself.com and take the stuff Mayor did, with his colours and everything... and put something very similar on it... and then...
curious how they can offer you that in the US, because adult content on cell phones is a NO GO. I know verizon gives no shortcodes if you offer adult content/ or text chats.

We follow strictly the guidelines setup by all US carriers. Feel free to contact me for me information.

You cant.. carriers wont allow it and even tightened restrictions here recently.. if somehow you manage to get by their screeners who provision your application.. you will get cut off soon enough. Even text chat applications that are 'by letter' not adult, but 'in spirit' are adult related (ie chat apps primarily used for sex chat etc) will get denied. Its crazy. Verizon is the most restrictive carrier of them all.. they are all about being the 'fundamentalist friendly' phone network.
