I'm doing awesome with mainstream mobile marketing, definitely look into SMS aggregators if you're looking to offer something similiar. There's quite a few in the USA and a lot of them offer recurring memberships but be prepared for a 40-60% fee from the telco's.

Its a pretty good business in the UK and Europe, downside is that the mobile operators take the Lion's share of the revenue.
Tip: If you do get into, make sure you get your own short code number, a lot of the companies offer shared short code numbers, so for example if you send 'lens' to 55566 they get a picture of you.
