Dumb ass George Bush dragging ex vets back in military!

Just read on yahoo news that George signed an order calling ex marines back to active duty for Iraq! This idiot is way out of control. Even my son is in danger of being put on active duty after he served five years.

Yep my mom works with a woman who nealry 60 year old hubby was "drafted". He hadn't served in over 10 years and was just in the guard. he previuously had served in the regular armed forces like 30 years ago.

Yep no better way to scare of potential recruits is to have apolicy where if you time has been finshed for DEACDES you can still be FORCED to go to war. And yes it's FORCED. Once you become a civilian you are no longer have to listen to the military.

What's ironic is that there are many many perfectly healthy homos that are willing to serve and die for their country, but are not allowed to.

just curious.. will you volunteer to go to Iran and Syria to defend freedom and spread democracy in the near future? Because you know they'll need good patriots like you to volunteer.. not enough troops right now to fight a 3rd world war..

Crappy scenario for those who already served!

Obviously the new recruitment figures never added up too well - hardly a surprise.

Here's a press report...

Army recently discharged another critically needed translator. They'd rather die than have a homo translate for them.

More bloviating by the uninformed.....

When you join the Army or Marines, you make an eight year commitment. Depending on the contract, you may serve a certain amount of time on active duty, active reserves, or inactive ready reserve.

Irregardless of how much active duty time you serve, you are subject to being called up any time during that eight year period depending on need. After you complete your eight years, and get your discharge ( AND in the case of officers, resign your commission) then you are done..... They own your ass for eight years, and the contract clearly states that. I went through the Army ROTC program and they made the eight year obligation crystal clear.

The Army has been pulling people from the IRR for quite a while. This new move affects approximately 1200 marines. They will not pull people on year 1 or year 8 of their obligation

In summary, no one is holding a gun to your head in today's volunteer military. You are signing up for eight years. After you sign on the dotted line, don't bitch if they call you up for an additional tour of active duty.

Actually they didn't.

Standard military contract requires 4 years in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) after you're discharged from active duty.
During that 4 year period you can be recalled at any time for any reason the President sees fit.

While I think it sucks and I was never for this war, the only other option is to have the troops over there be stretched too thin which would only lead to more casualties.

This is not true. When I signed up for the Marines, I signed up for four years - plus four years of "inactive reserve duty" meaning I was subject to being recalled at any time the US Goverment so decided.

Being as I got out of the Marines in 1990.... Kuwait.... yeah, I was a bit worried.

I wont' add to what already has been said... IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) is 4 years after you done your time, generally 4 years standard.

As a Veteran, I feel for our troops during this time. Desert Storm was not a protracted war, this is truly the "Vietnam" of our generation.

Think about it. If the government doesn't draft women you can bank on some asshat taking them to court to ensure that they do.

That's the main reason why the Pentagon would prefer to stick with an all volunteer army...... if possible.

The other day I took my flatmate's 70 something year old father who was in the British military to a military museum in our area (Woolwich Aresenal). He had a ten minute conversation with another man his age that also served. A good portion of their conversation was about how once you served you were alwaysin the military and how even at their age you shouldn't totally rule out being called up again.

I was in the Marine Corps, did my 4 years active and waited out my 4 years IRR too. Thankfully, that ended in '03. That and I've got a disability %.

But, believe it or not...even with a disability %, I'm still only tier 2 of the draft. If it comes, excuses or no...most of you are eligible and most of you will go.
