They are really quite useless, they are not very powerful at all and do a fairly pisspoor job just like the robotic lawnmowers? though the roombas you can hack into really easily and just fuck around with it for fun, makes for a nice cheap robot to mess around with, and the new ones I think they let you plug directly into them so you don?t even have to waste the time making the interface cord, etc.

So glad I never bought one of those. I've never really heard anyone say anything good about them.

they leave cool crop circle patterns on the carpet and keep the dog entertained but that is about it.

For maintenance and getting dust and junk cleaned up and having fresh looking carpets all the time they are great. I really like my Discovery version, as it picks up the dirt before it gets ground into the carpet(the most important aspect of them, imo).
When I put new carpet in the house it was the first thing I bought(with ARS rewards), and believe it was a great investment. The carpet is going on 3 years old now and looks every bit as good as it did when installed(and I have 2 kids)

They are not meant to be a total replacement for vacuuming. You will still have to vacuum once or twice a month(mainly for the edges), depending on how much of a clean freak you are.

They are also not meant for slobs, they go everywhere you let it, and if you have clothing, or string, or anything bigger or longer than you would normally suck up a regular vacuum, you will have problems.

I had the first version of the Roomba. I loved it. It's not meant to replace doing a full vac job, but it does prolong the time in between vac jobs by a lot. It's perfect for touch up jobs and spot cleaning. I'd let it run loose every few days and i would only have to vac once every 3 weeks or so.
