    Opt-in Email Marketing, how dangerous?

    Let's talk about it, it's a good way to make money
    but is it worth it?

    I did a search for RK Netmedia/Bangbros and I saw they was charged
    $650,000 for breaking the can-spam laws.

    I mean that's a looooooot of money for
    pissing off one or a few surfers.

    Anyone has some good info on all the things I need to think
    about before I send out an email?

    Also, If I host in europe and live in Sweden, they can't fuck me
    with US laws, right?

    I went from 100 to 313,000 satoshis in 2 days! Lots of daily freerolls...

      You could always do double opt, never seen any threads on mailing go anywhere here apart from die and there is prolly good reason for that.

          You can do double opt, triple opt, or you can have the srufers opt 10 times, and send in DNA, and the instant 1 complains, even with his DNA in your fridge, it is SPAM.

          And do you really want to test the long arm of the law. ?

                      Actually it's quite possible that they can. A new agreement has recently been signed by a lot of European countries along with the US, allowing governments to ignore jurisdiction when fighting online crime - including spam.

                      conventions.coe.int/Treaty/EN/Treaties/Html/185.htm (copy/paste it - no URLs allowed for the new kid)

                      It looks like Sweden signed it as well.

                              not true. idiot surfers who don't take the time to realize where they and what they are submitting their emails to do not dictate law.

                                  The Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime is not law - it's a working document and likely be many years before elements may or may not be implemented by participating countries. A crime can only be a crime if it holds that status within a country - else there is no basis for other elements such as extradition.

                                  Basically it covers existing offenses where there already is international cooperation between law enforcement (has existed since around the 50's), tho these are mainly more serious offenses.

                                  Spam is well down the list of concerns

                                      As far as I know you need to have a valid adress in every email and you should get permission (with time-stamp and IP to be sure) to send the mail aswell as add an unsubscribe-link in every email you send. To be sure that you get permission and that it's not some moron adding his ex to 5 gazillion newsletters, make sure that you use double opt-in, that is: when someone opts in to your list, you send him a confirmation email. If he signed up with a time-stamp and confirmed the link, he wants your emails. And if he doesn't want them anymore he'll just click the unsubscribe link. Just keep a valid adress in your emails and you should do fine.

                                          only thing i have done recently is promoting mainstream sending out to colleges. i have access to the lists of most of the major .edus berkeley etc. good for promoting mainstream stuff thats of interest to college kids

                                              Spam is shit man - OK, some may earn out of it, but there are better ways of earning than pissing everyone off.

                                              Double opt-in is fine along the lines described by godisdead above.

                                              The fact that you also operate/live in the EU is also a plus - they are not stupid neurotic over sending email and not a problem if this is an optin list.

                                              RK Netmedia.. well.. what you expect? Any reasonable use of email is fine, mass spamming is not.
