how to deal with illness in your family
This has been a crazy summer. My brother had a rare liver disease, had to have a transplant, my sis was the donor. Surgery was done in rochester a few weeks ago, everything seems ok so far but them we just found out my mom has cancer. good god, it makes you ask yourself whats next....
So I have a brother and a sis that are both very sick untill they start recovering and a mom that i dont know whats going to happen... This is nuts!!!! Also i have been asked to organize a jamboree for my brother...Does anyone know how to do such a thing? I have never done it before....any advice at all would be appreciated...they have to travel to roch, 2 days a week, its almost 4hours from us.....I am going nuts...I think...I dont know Thanks for listening to me vent!!!

My thoughts are with you Deb. The sad thing is that when you go "what else could go wrong", you find out plenty. Have been through similar situations and currently have a mother-in-law with Alzheimer's living with us. She's 80, so that situation could be worse.
If you need to raise money for your brother, that would be one of the times a church comes in handy! They know how to organize such events and have the manpower to do it. Doing something like that on your own would be way to much. Don't think I could spell out all the details. If nothing else make a plan. Put it on paper and dig in. Asking for help makes a ton of sense on doing all the mechanics of the event. With luck some good ideas will pop up in this thread. You always have friends at GFY. The haters are part of the package too, just ignore them. Wish there was something I could say that would really help. |

Stay strong, man. Just make sure that whatever you do or wherever you may be, family should always come first.

Deb it would probably be a good idea to find somebody to help you out and delegate the tasks.

A handful of us did something like that once in my eensy town. A long time bartender at the place I worked got cancer. We raised around $8K, which held him over until his disability with SSI kicked in. (would have held him over, that is, he passed before the disability came through)
We rented the legion hall, and had 12 hours of food and bands. It sure wasn't a one person job, but it paid off in the long run.

yeh thats similar to what we are doing....
They have HUGE expenses from this, my brother alone has to take meds the rest of his life to make sure his body doesnt reject the liver, those meds alone are like 600 a month...he has insurance but i think it only cover 25% or something crazy....As far as disability i am not sure how thats going.... Business's ,must get people everyday looking for donations like that, so i guess i can understand why they cant make everyone happy..... Thanks for your thoughts Deb

i wish you and your familly all the best, but if you ask me how to stop it - i don't know.
I don't think you should pray more or something. In such cases you can only try to overview your life and change something (if there is something you can change) and have patience. |

There is no good way to deal with it.... my father's Alzheimer's has been particularly hard to deal with. You just have to take it day by day, especially with incurable diseases. The party idea seems good, may at least give them a few hours of happiness from the euphoria.
