ha, I'd always been under the impression it was a free event to go to, sure there'd be stuff to buy there, but since it's all about celebration and gathering (or so it seems to be) why would a buncha hippies charge SO much to experience freedom ?

It seems a little moronic to me

Wow, $280? What about those who can't afford to go? Isn't that all part of the whole spiritual ideal?

It COSTS to go there? Back when I was reading about it 8 or so years ago it was free. Funny how things change.

i'd imagine there are some essential services that the organizers have to provide (washrooms, medical, etc). still seems like a lot considering the amount of people who go. 40k times 280= 11.2 million.

From what I'm reading on their site, there are no washrooms, just porto-potties. And it doesn't seem like there's any medical service for emergencies either. The site heavily stresses that everyone is responsible for themselves.

40k people go? Wow.

yeah just porta-potties and i can only imagine the condition they are in after about a day. i guess i was a bit over in saying 40k people but this is what Rand had to say in another thread about burning man

"For one week, Black Rock City is the 5th largest city in Nevada. Population just under 40,000.

Yes there are porta-potties, but there are no showers. Everything you need to exist for one week, including the water you bathe in, must be brought in with you -and- taken out as well. There isn't trash collection or receptacles at burning man.

However, there is a hospital (med-tent), a fire department, a post office, a DMV (department of mutant vehicles) and an airport.

The only things allowed to be sold at BMan are ice (at Camp Arctica) and the beverages sold at Center Camp (tea, coffee, lemonade). You can't buy food at B-man or charge admission for anything."

one of the reasons burning man started charging so much is because it became a tourist attraction for low life ignorant assholes that have no business being there...they trash the land and don't care about anything...the organizers have to rent and pay people at the end of the week the place is a total disaster...it costs a LOT of money to clean it all up

they are sold, craigslist works wonders.

and on the porta-potties. they have a human waste disposal system, and trucks drive around daily and pump the poop out of the hole.

i know this because my friends got a free ticket for driving the truck last year.

jace is pretty right on, it costs so much and is a four hour drive outside of reno to deter the jackasses who come out to steal things from people, and to take pictures of naked girls. last year by the middle of the week i was covering my breasts because guys were snapping pictures left and right.

if you understand the philosophy behind Burning Man you understand that you *ask* to take someone's picture before doing so. this is just one of the many things that the Burning Man organisers are trying to prevent from happening so much because it really takes away from the real meaning and experiment of the gift economy art community that The Playa is.

there are also hundreds of porta-potties and ice brought in daily, people who work for the BM association, people who are there months beforehand and months afterwards.

in other news, i also have a ticket at the gate that needs to be changed over into someone else's name who'd like to go. it's in poor taste to charge more money for a ticket that you bought to Burning Man (again - read up on the philosophy) than you paid, and i paid $175 for mine i believe. if you're interested and i know you hit me up on ICQ or email me.

The insurence and permits alone are insane. And the event gives huge grants to artists. You can read at Burningman.com to see why it is so expensive to put on teh event.

You forget that for most attendees, the ticket price is irrelevent. We usually spend LOTS more on our art and gifts to give to other attendees.
