American driver license--->A joke, or is this real?

You study some books with the basic rules

You goto some building with computers

You get your room/pc number, you answer X questions

When you passed you get a driver license

You can drive a car

True or not?

Depends if this is your first time or not.
You still have to drive the car at some point. usually when you turn 16.

Close... that's the process for the learners permit. The exam for the actual license is an actually driving test.

15 1/2 yrs old (minimum age for learners permit)
16 yrs old (age to obtain license)

I can drive even without a license. But since it was dictated by law, you cannot drive without a license even if you know how to.

What is allowed with this learners permit? I saw a kid driving a huge truck, when he got his 'temp' license...Is that allowed?

In NJ now you have to be 16 to get a learner's permit, which lasts a year. You must be in the car with an adult, and there are restricted hours.

If you complete this year, you can then get a provisional license at 17 (after you pass your permit). This allows you to drive alone, as long as it is not between midnight and 5 am, and you may not have more than one or two person's under 18 or 21. (I'm not sure of the ages off the top of my head).

After your one year of driving, when you turn 18 you can get a normal drivers license. If you are 18 and have not done the above, you still have to do your provisional year.

Each state is different. You need a number of supervised hours behind a wheel when you're 15/16 (usually drivers ed which is offered at school). They just raised this requirement in Illinois. The courses usually are a mix of behind the wheel training, driver simulators, and textbook learning.

If you score high enough in these courses, you can usually skip the driving/written test at the DMV. Otherwise you have to take a written test, eye test, and drivers test to get your license.

Learners permit usually just means you can drive if you are with someone over 18 with a license in the passenger seat.

it varies from state to state, some states are not issueing unrestricted driving privledges untill you are 17.5-18 years old. some are allowing kids as young as 12 i believe to drive within 15 miles of home and only farm related equipment.

but yes, all you have to do is pass a written test, and a driving test and you will have a license, but drivers under a certain age. usually 18, have to go through a trial period of sorts before getting a full on license. but i think if you were say 30, there is no trial period. least in none of the states iv lived in.

in my town we all took a driver' ed class. about 40 hours of class and 10 hours of driving. then we have to pass their written test before we could take the test for the state lic. each state is different.

oh, and we had to pay for the class out of pocket and the teachers were qualified driving instructors

Some states also require a driving course. Florida, for example, requires either 4 or 6 (not sure, it's been a while) hours of driving instruction with a certified driving school before they will give you a license, and you still have to take their written, road, and eye exams.

There's not one set age for driving federally mandated, states determine that individually

In the midwest, land of no public transportation, its 14 years old to get a learners permit. 15 for a work/school permit (you can drive directly to between home & school/work alone). & at 16 you are on your own - after you pass driver ed or the DOT driver's test.

If you live on a farm you can get a permit even younger!!!

Here in The Netherlands it kinda works like

18 years old you can get your driver license...

You need to take lessons in a special car (double gas/brake/clutch) with an instructor. Normally after +- 30 hour of lessons you can try to get your license during an exam...You can take this exam, only when you also passed your theory exam...50 questions, and you can make 5 mistakes...

Your real exam will be taken by the 'CBR' an agency, that gives our permits. They will take the seat of the driving instructor, and in around 25 minutes they decide if you drive safe, follow the rules, not to fast, not to slow etc...

If you passed this one, you get your drivers license....

I think on average ppl fail like 1-2 times. And you have to take extra lessons, request another exam etc...

I think in general a license will cost you around 1800 euro nowadays. Not sure tho. I know I paid only 1050 euro, but I passed the first time

Andre

In washington state it's almost the exact same. (at least it was 7 years ago) Except you can get your license at 16.

Yep. I've never known one farm kid that wasn't a good driver. All of my family and cousins learned to drive very young.

I'm not sure why the Europeans here think its so odd that a 16 year old drives. 16 year olds get charged for murder. Plus, nobody wants to tote their kid back and forth every night to school, work, and after school activities.

Shit, just to go to the store you need to drive because the distances are so damn long for EVERYTHING you do.

Personally I think it is irresponsible to let 16 year olds drive, but on the flipside, what are they to do? The public transportation system here sucks ass, everything is MILES away and mom and dad will not drive you everywhere as they have work to attend to.

That said, kids cannot go to war and die for their country before they are 18. And they cannot drink alcohol until 21 - so.............

PS. I do love living here, I am getting accustomed to the abnormalities...

I think anyone over 60 should be required to take a test to renew their license... most of the problems you come across on the road are fucking old people

Andre
exactly same here
just not for 1k, but around 300-500 Euro
