He's not punching the mat - both punches land right on his face. You can clearly see it in the full videos on Youtube. Their heads clash really hard after the slam too - which could do just as much damage the slam itself. Ouch!

what gets really difficult to watch is when they start bringing in the knees to the head, blow after blow. I can't believe how often guys will walk away after taking that kind of punishment and look only "slightly put out"

I agree, I generally do something else when I get too bored. Why I love watching Genki Sudo or Gomi, it's almost always a great fight.
