Japan rivals the U.S. in porn production. You can see titties on broadcast TV (as in some European countries), and their legal adult industry is huge, although censored (no pubes, etc. - it has to be blurred or be covered with a mosaic pattern). AV Girls (as they call porn stars in Japan), can make lots of money.
Japan also has a huge underground hardcore market (urabon), mostly controlled by the Yakuza (Japanese mafia).
The language and race barriers would make it difficult to get accepted, but I know there are some people doing it. I would add this caveat, exercise extreme caution, since as a foreigner you are already going to stick out like a sore thumb.
I check the porn scene out when I am there, but there are just too many hassles for me to want to get into it as a producer.
I can find the same stuff here that I see in Japan, so I generally focus most of my time on other pursuits when visiting Japan.

Some are, although I would say most aren't, and those that are mostly cater to Japanese clientele. If you are looking for hookers, Japan has a huge Fuzoku (sex for hire) scene.
The range and prevelance of services is staggering. Prices vary considerably, and it really helps to get introduced into the scene by a local (it is not uncommon to see signs at sex establishments that read "No Foreigners").
They have "soapland" massage parlors all over Japan, and then there are special "clubs" that cater to all sorts of fetishes, from Cosplay (costume play) to kinky BDSM play, etc.
Personally, I think it's a lot easier (and less expensive) to get laid going to areas/clubs where foreigners congregate (Shinjuku, Shibuya, etc). Women outnumber men by a large number in Tokyo, and young Japanese male students and salarymen tend to be more focused on career oriented pursuits rather than chasing skirts, so there are always plenty of girls in their 20's curious to experience a relationship with a foreigner.
If you Goggle the word Fuzoku, you will find plenty of info on the Japanese sex trade...

This thread is great, fantastic reading. My goal in this part of my life (23 years old) is to travel the world, and actually live in other places than the U.S. The beautiful thing about being a webmaster is this ability is granted if you make the time to make your sites run on auto with the occasional stat checking to make sure everything is running smoothly.
