Yes, we absolutely should. We are not doing anything positive there. We should pull out our troops tomorrow, and when the secretarian violence dies down and a legitimate government takes power, we should pay them reparations in the hundreds of billions of dollars for the infrastructure we've destroyed and the devastation we have cause to their economy for the past four years. Obviously trying to installing a US friendly dictator there has not worked and will never work, so what is the point in staying at this point? Right now the neo-cons are just holding on so they can squeeze even more money from the US tax payers.
The longer we stay there, the more US troops will die, the more Iraqi civilians will die, the more the resistance will become the only option for Iraqi men, the more the ultra-wealthy will rob the middle class Americans, and the more hatred will build towards the US in the middle east and in the rest of the world. There is nothing positive we can achieve by staying in Iraq.
Just imagine, this entire mess could have been avoided with three bullets. One for Saddam, and one for each of his sons. Exact same result.Comment

I think it would be one of the dumbest move ever. You guys need Iraq to get the middle east. Middle east = Oil = energy crisis = power.

OR.... Maybe we should give the new government a bill for the destruction they caused in Kuwait, the billions of dollars in lost profits the Kuwaiti government lost when they destroyed 600 oil wells, the billions of dollars it took to clean up the mess, and a bill for the costs the US picked up going over there to evict Iraq from Kuwait.Originally posted by Mr. SoulYes, we absolutely should. Actually, it wouldn't be settled. The country would break into three pieces - a shia one, a sunni one, and a kurdish one. The shia part would probably ally itself with Iran, perhaps even become a part of Iran. The sunni one would not have oil, and therefore would be dirt poor, fuelling fundamentalism and possibly a war against the shia and kurdish parts. The kurdish one would ally itself with the kurds in Turkey and Iran, which would cause a conflict with (and possibly cause a war with) Turkey.Originally posted by Mr. SoulIt would be settled eventually. As opposed to what it is now? Not a mess, that hasn't cost hundreds of thousands of lives?
I agree with your assessment of the dangers, but what you described will happen eventually whether we are there or not. The entire post colonial idea of the country of Iraq is falwed, we shouldn't be trying to clean up the mess caused by the British Empire. Obviously we do not have the resources and/or ability to control this country. Right now we have the beginning of what you described, only with our guys stuck in the middle, and our money being flushed down the drain.
You are obviously well informed, what do you see as the benefit of our troops staying there? What kind of realistic result do you see from a continued occupation?Comment

There is still the chance that Iraq could become a democracy, if the government manages to gain more control and succeeds in establishing basic security for its citizens. To do this, it needs more time up to build up the police and military.
True, this may well not happen. And yes, the US presence fuels resentment among the population (a truly international force, or even better, an arabic one, would be much better). However, if the US were to withdraw right now or in the near future, collapse would be almost inevitable.
The continued presence of US troops is, right now, the only thing preventing such a collapse. Even if the chance of things working out this way is rather small, it's the only chance Iraq has.
(of course, Iraq will never become the pro-western democracy Bush the neocons dream of, but that goes without saying)/(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

That chance is about as good as me fucking Angelina Jolie. Actually no it's not. It's about as likely as me fucking Angelina Jolie and seconds before I'm about to cum the house gets struck by a meteorite made of solid diamond, killing us both instantly then revealing a secret underground bunker that Osama Bin Laden has been hiding in the last five years and he comes out with his pants down because he was getting a handjob by Condoleezza Rice.Originally posted by LibertineThere is still the chance that Iraq could become a democracy, if the government manages to gain more control and succeeds in establishing basic security for its citizens.

If there were only two major groups vying for power, I would have to agree with you. The fact that there are three, though, might make a difference, since it ensures that in the political sphere, there will always be a number of differences and disagreements along various lines. This could, in theory at least, be used to divert attention from any single disagreement. Right now, for example, the political spectrum could be thought to consist of the kurds, the sunnis, the shiites allied to Iran, the shiites not allied to Iran, as well as a number of other (splinter-)groups. Each group has enough disagreements with the others to ensure that no single agenda is pushed through, and that no single one disagreement can become the only focal point for conflict.Originally posted by notabookThat chance is about as good as me fucking Angelina Jolie. Of course, any possible democracy in Iraq would still most likely become a strongly islamist and possibly anti-western one, and certainly not an example of any western ideals of democracy./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

Oh, just for clarity: I think Iraq becoming a democracy is at best a 25% chance, assuming America stays the course. Without America, chances of Iraq becoming a democracy seem negligible.

There will never be a true demoCRAZY in Iraq, at least we clearly agree on that. There will be far too many political assassinations, corruption (viva la Mexico!), and other bullshit to preventing it from becoming a 'beacon of hope' in the Middle East. So while it may hold a title of 'democracy', it'll be no truer a democracy than me say I like black people. It just won?t happen and it doesn?t matter how many major power players there are ? two, three, seven, twelve, sixty-four; it just won?t fucking matter.Originally posted by LibertineIf there were only two major groups vying for power, I would have to agree with you. Then again maybe it will. Maybe in a decade you?ll see the first Iraqi president, truly elected by the people. Of course he will be the only person running on the ballot as the other?s running were strangely either imprisoned before the election due to the killing of a hooker or accidentally killed in car crashes. I know they looked like they were full of gunshot wounds, but I assure you they are not.Last edited by notabook; 08-03-2006, 05:13 PM.

We need to pull out as soon as possible. I don't understand why we can't train Iraqi military here on our soil ... where it can be done right. Let them experience the American lifestyle for a couple of months and send them back to the 'collective' with the seed of American ideology planted in them. It sickens me to think of the billions and billions of dollars that are wasted on this completely uneccesary war. Not to mention the lies behind it.
We should lead by example and that means that charity starts at home. How about spending some of that money developing other fuel sources so we don't even need their fucking oil. Jesus, how hard can it be to make an electric car?? AND what the fuck ever happened to Osama Bin Laden? *sigh* I'm all over the place.

I was having some tea shooting the breeze with this REALLY old bedouin dude named Saad. Nice guy & all, a real trip...
Anyways I was telling him how I felt bad during the Storm while I was on a base where we were launching massive sorties at say, 11pm and I was kinda annoyed trying to get some sleep listening to about an hour or so of jets taking off...then I was thinking <fuck those poor assholes on the receiving end are REALLY getting a shitty night's sleep>...
His response!?
"Fuck the Iraqi's they're crazy bastards anyways. You know what, if you remove Sadam they will vote in another crazy asshole or government..."
He went on a tirade for about 15-20min that was pretty interesting to say the least.
Strange place in history we're at.

I don't think they'll have a draft unless they start another war, like say with Iran and North Korea. And what are the odds of that?' Oh, wait, shit.
They just upped the inlistment aged to 42. I wonder what the cut off age for the draft would be.Comment
