Self-interest in the case of individuals working on their own behalf is what free enterprise should not only allow, but encourage. However, if that same degree of self-interest can be exercised by those who govern, it will inevitably lead to a perversion of government.

If we did drain the gravy from the train, we would likely have to pay more to encourage competent people to stand for election. But purely as a matter of principle, why should a job requirement to limit self-interest be any more onerous than regulations stating that someone on a building site must wear a hard-hat? If you don't like the rules, don't take the job.

Okay, I think now I'm getting your point. You're saying that self-interest in politics leads to disaster. I agree that stupid short-term self-interest thinking on behalf of politicians has ruined much of the economic freedom that was once there.

It's the old problem of "Who guards the guards?"
I'm not sure that democracy can do the trick. But so far it's the best we've got.
