Or has the procedure advanced enough that I might consider letting some doctor near my eyes?

well, that's one out of two.

i have this thing about letting anything near my eyes; hence the inability to even wear contacts.

having watched a show on the discovery channel about all the things that can and do go wrong with lasik....makes me very leery, since i only have one set of eyes.

Raven, study the facts before you do anything. The failure rate on this stuff is really low, lower than most elective surgeries. THe procedure is pretty quick, relative simple, and mostly done by computer.

I am almost 5 years, got mine done early and I cannot complain.

I had a radial keratonomy (think I spelled that right) about 25 years ago. That was back in the day when they used to use a diamond blade to cut your eye with. It was one of the smartest things I have ever done.

Before the operation I was blind as a bat, and could not see clearly more than 10' away. While age has resulted in me needing reading glasses for small print like newspapers and telephone books, I can see well enough to pass a driving test with no glasses.

I wish I could have Lasik, I would do it in a flash, but it is my understanding that they don't have it for farsightedness yet.

from what i've read, no...they don't have it for farsightedness...but presbyopia is an inevitability....so, i don't think that's a reason not to have it.

good advice, alex...and we have been. it's covered by our insurance and certainly, my honey and i would like the option....

see, though, it's that low failure rate that gets me...i don't want to be in that category...oops, you're the one in seven million that got fucked up.

I think you misunderstood. I can see far away, just not close up, so there is no reason for me to have it. If you have myopia, go for it, and you can thank me later for encouraging you to do it.

You ever look at the stats of how many people slip and hurt themselves in the shower? Would you quit showering because of it?

Go to a board certified doctor and get them to look you over. If you are not a good candidate, they will let you know. The procedure has a pretty low incidence of problems. But I wouldn't go to the guy that's selling "the best deal". I'd find the best guy in your area. After all, they are your eyes...and you might need those.

I know a few ppl who did it...Most are happy, except one, she is practilly blind on one eye now....

And yeah she had a good doctor, in a good hospital etc...After 3-4 weeks she woke up, and one eye didn't 'work' They are still looking why etc...

Since I only have minus 1 and minus 1.50 I decided not to 'do' it...

Hehe good one...However, since my eyes are not that bad, I decided not todo it...

Not sure, but can't they fix ONE eye first, and after 6 months the other one? So when it goes wrong, you don't have issues on both?

I think you would have major issues if you went 6 months with one good eye and one bad eye . . . sounds like major headaches.

Something should be mentioned . . . the eye is one of the fastest healing organs in your body. In fact, they give you drops to keep from healing too fast so the eye can flatten out (the purpose of the cutting is to relieve pressure).

i didn't misunderstand....you need reading glasses...that's far sighted....and as we age, it's called prebyopia. and lasik doesn't go there.

Not sure...I mean, when you nromally have contacts/glasses which makes

-5 and -2 0 and 0

Now one eye has been fixed so that is 0 so for the other eye, you keep he contacts that makes it 0 too...

I have never been able to wear contacts, my eyes were far too shitty for them. Huge coke bottle glasses is what i've been stuck with since my pre-teens. I wonder of Lasik could actually help here.

yeah, but you only have eyes, no face, so if you lost your eyes you would be pretty screwed

i think we're both going to do it. doesn't seem to be a reason not to..i'm really getting tired of wearing glasses...and i don't need reading glasses..it'd be nice to wake up in the morning and see the details of the world....

Contacts aren't to hard to wear, I wear them, and I was feeling werid when I had to stick something in my eye, but it's cool.

My cousin had the procedure done a year ago. He has constant halo's at night.

Although the statistics show many happy people, you never know if you will be in the percentage that gets bad surgery.

LASIK NIGHTMARE -
Here?s the deal. I?ve had severe complications from lasik surgery.
My doctor WAS Dr. Robert Maloney of the Maloney Vision Institute
in Los Angeles and ?Extreme Makeover?. I will not be going to him again.
I?ve had FIVE surgeries on my right eye. Three were lasik surgeries and
one was an attempt at corrective surgery by Maloney. Most recently,
I had another corrective surgery by another doctor and let me tell you,
once my complications began in 2003, it was a bitch! My last "procedure"
was a 90 minute surgery, and I had 17 stitches in my eye for three weeks!

I learned to appreciate my eyes while I was teaching the blind at Braille Institute. Most of my students lost their sight due to diabetes. I'm too scared to try lasik, even if they told me that 99.99% of their patients are happy. I'd rather wear my glasses.

Every tried 'daily' contacts? That is what I use...Love it... In the morning you put on some fresh contacts, and in the evening, you throw them away...

Always clean contacts, and no need to clean, store them etc...

Also when I goto the beach, and there is sand in them, I just throw them away...

As far as 'bad' experiences....I don't know how often in % it goes wrong... But keep in mind, that internet is mainly for the complainers...

I mean, I had a dislocated arm...I looked on the internet how long it would take...Well believe me, ONLY bad stories Like, it still falls off so now and then, I had to get surgery, and can't move at all anymore, I still have pain 2 years later etc etc

But for me after 6-8 weeks I was 100% again....But you don't see me posting in all those health newsgroups/forums....

that's the thing.....i have this thing about eyes and things going in it or near them....i've been trying to wear contacts for years. simply cannot put my finger or a foreign object into my eye.

Lasek is abit more expensive and teh recovery takes longer then Lasik.
Lasek is abit better since the recovery is 100%. Lasek is used for policemen, army and people that do martial arts.

They can fixing farsightedness. One procedure they do is monovision, where one eye is for far and the other is for reading. Crazy, but people that have had it says it works.

I had that problem for years but I just got over it. I still have issues taking them out, but you have to do what you have to do. The thought of someone or something cutting my eye open or having a suction cup on them grosses me out way more than sticking a finger into my eye lol.

I have thought about it several time but never go through with it. I have read and know of a few people who have had problems with it. I also know many people who rave about it saying it's the best thing they ever did. Bottome line is if it works out well you are thrilled. If not you are kind of screwed because many times they can't correct some of the issues.

In the end I just don't want to fuck with my eyes and realize that glasses are not that bad.

I just had it done last week. The procedure itself takes ten minutes - but it is very uncomfortable I'll admit. Afterwards, you take a nap for 3 hours and wake up seeing just fine. Take some drops for a week, and your vision improves every day. I've never had 20-20 vision in my life....now I'm 20-25....and can read the bottom of the eye chart without glasses....Additionally, I don't see halos around lights at night when I drive
