    Deadwood: Fact or fiction?

How much of Deadwood is based on true events? I know that the way Bill Hickock died was real, and he really was one of the more feared and excellent marksmen of the time. Saw a special about him a couple weeks ago and everything tied in with Deadwood. So now I'm wondering how much of the show is based on events that were happening at the time.

    Any input?

From what I have read from interviews with the writter/director it is fiction based on a real place and some real characters.

EXAMPLE: they just brought in Wyatt and Morgan Earp who were real characters in history and did spend time in Deadwood.......................the rest is made up.

It's tru that they used foul language back then. Except for the fact that the words they used back then are pretty much mild cussing for today.

So the HBO writers made the cussing very extreme in order to get the point across that yess they cussed badly in those days in that atmosphere.

I read some cool stuff about the show. I'm a big fan of the show and did some research into it. The creator said that when they first shot it they used curse words that would have actually been curse words during the time of the real deadwood but that it sounded silly so they made it a little more modern. Many of the characters are real people. As hard as it may be to grasp they actually make Swearengine out to be nicer then he was in real life. Some of the events are real and the politics and growth of the area are real, but many of the confrontations and relationships are not. In real life Bullock and Swearengine basically split the town and half and neither crossed over to the other's side and they never talked to each other because of thier hatred for each other.
