Anyone got some information on NYC living costs?

Any indication of what the bare minimum in terms of costs is for a single person living in NYC? (including rent, food, utilities, etc)

If you don't have at least $5 - $6k /month, don't even think about moving to NYC.

Damn. A PhD takes 5 years, they give you something like $20k a year, and you shouldn't have any time left to actually do any work besides studying

I honestly don't even care that much about whether it's a good place to live or not, I just want a great philosophy department which is strong in both of my fields of research. And, unfortunately, NYU is the best by far when it comes to that. (with Princeton, MIT, Australian National University, Rutgers and Brown coming after that)

i used to live there. its very very expensive. be prepared to spend over 2000$ a month for rent to live in an apartment thats as big as a walk in closet. subway and bus transit cards are $76 a month (metro card) buy it with ur credit card cuz if u lose it, u can get the money credited back to u. once u learn ur way around the subway system, u will never get lost, they come about every 5-10 mins during the day, at like 3 am maybe every 20-40 depending on which train. food emporium has the best groceries and most selection. gristedes is expensive. taxies are $2.50 initial charge, 40 cents every 4 blocks (2 aves). they have surcharges depending on the time of day. (1$ more during rush hour. .50 cents more at nite) lol as expensive as it is, i miss nyc!! basically from uptown to midtown is 13 bucks, and 15 midtown to downtown. any more q's?

people survive here for bare minimum at around $2k/m
1bdr apt = $1k+/m outside of Manhattan; subway/bus $2 one ride, $10 lunch
grocery is not that high up in price than rest of the country.

for 20k/y you might have some moneys left for books and beer.

i remember living in brooklyn 8-9 ago on a very limited money during my dark ages, i would spend $20/week on food that's it. i survived

living in the city w/o good financial backing is crazy, i remember looking at aptartments in the sity, 500 sq.f studio would run for $1.5k+ - some peoples closets are larger than that. I was back in 2000. I ended up with huge 1 bedroom apartment in brooklyn sheepsheadbay area for less than 1k at that time.

the city is divere so you might find lots of different options.

Eh most college students short on funds just share with others. Just share an apartment and you'll be fine if you live modestly. When people say like 5K I think they are exaggerating a bit, that's only if you want to live "very nicely". If you don't mind sharing with a few folks and living cheaply/cutting costs then it shouldn't cost that much. Some college students are even sharing like a studio or a room. It's ghetto, but I'm sure you don't NEED 5k a month to get buy.

It's like people exaggerating and saying you need to make 70k to live in Socal. You really don't. If your cheap and live with roommates you can even live here making 20k a year. All depends on lifestyle.

You won't be ballin' but you won't be close to dying either.

I've seen aids on Craigslist for NY roommates and some aren't that expensive.

If you're willing to consider going to Princeton instead, you can rent an apartment in the Maple Shade/Cherry Hill, NJ area for $900-$1400/month. Here's an example of an apartment complex in Maple Shade - - http://rentals.move.com/call/8662489212

This complex is in a nice area and is near shopping centers with easy access to I-295. It's also approximately 15-20 minutes from Philly.

Princeton doesn't offer as much in terms of fellowships (with tuition wavers and stipends) as NYU does, so it's actually more expensive.

yo yo yo...i live in the city....1br. about 750 sq feet probably. $2400 just for rent, High speed cable plus cable TV $112. metrocard $76 for 30 days unlimited. grocerys r crazy expensive. I spend about $80 a week on groceries. Electric(CONED) is about $120 in summer with A/C and $50 without A/C. NYSC gym us $84month.

Then, if u add in going out to dinnner, drinks...and if ur a playa, dating adds up $$$...sometimes i question myself what am i doing here but while the money is flowing and i banked a shitload back in my haydays in 1998-2001...id move otherwise.

the plus about living here, the girls r HOT and there really is no competition. so much to do, never a dull moment.

i dont think grad students get dorms at NYU anymore. best bet if money is tight, look on craigslist and do the room mate thing. good luck. ill take u out for a drink when u get here(drinks range from $12 to $16 depending where u go) lol

oh sorry, bare minimum...u could find a studio for $1300 but it wont be near NYU most likely. very tough to find studios down there under $1700.
id say $2000 with expenses and no life. if u want to have some sort of a life, $2500month. its super expensive here dude. u cant lleave ur aprtment and not spend money.

what do u want to do once u graduate? just because u go to a school thats rated #1 in the field of study for you, doesnt necessarily mean more reward $$$ or that you will mesh with the program. did u get accepted?

He was probably talking about clubs. Clubs everywhere are expensive. You don't seem like much of a club person. Dive bars are fine.

Once I graduate? I'd like to do more research, and maybe pursue a professorship. The only reason I want to go to the best possible university for a PhD is that I want to have the best possible environment to do research, and be able to share my thoughts with and learn from the best minds in the field. There is no money in philosophy (associate professorships will net you a meagre $40-50k a year), so the only reason for going to a good philosophy department is wanting to get the most out of ones studies in terms of knowledge

As for getting accepted, I haven't even applied yet. But to get in, you need the right connections and references, and to know which are the right ones, you need to know where you want to go.

Don't let these folks scare you. You can rent an apartment under $1000 in decent parts of Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem and even Jersey which are all 15 to 25 minutes away from anywhere you want to go in most of Manhattan.

Those areas are not all scary, you would be pleasantly surprised what you will find. Tons of NYU students discover this every year.

After that, $76 for your metrocard will take care of all of your transportation needs. I mean all of them... no where else has the quality public transportation that NY does. Millionaires take the train here every day if that's any indication of what to expect. It's not like other places where you need a car. People don't even expect other people to own a car here. It's like no where else in that regard.

Food can be had for normal anywhere USA prices. Whatever you are spending where you are is what you can expect. Plus, NY is the king of the best cheap bagles and pizza everywhere. $2 will fill you up anytime of the day and you can do it on virtually every block. Ya can't beat that.

As far as entertainment you will be ok with very little money. Check out www.villagevoice.com or www.timeout.com for listings of cool things to do that don't cost a lot of money.

And if you really wanna save money, get a girlfriend on orientation day. Another NYU freshman will live the same way you do and not expect much from you. You two will enjoy just exploring the city for a year or so.

Oh, I forgot one key thing, if you want to find a good, but cheap apartment you really should pay a real estate broker. Nice & cheap places exist, even in Manhattan but you are gonna need some help finding them. www.citi-habitats.com is probably the best at finding them. You can also use the search on www.NYtimes.com

Enjoy.

You need to make at least $50,000 to live alone in Manhattan. Boroughs are cheaper, but will vary by neighborhood. Folks in Brooklyn Heights are so fixated on *being* in Manhattan, they have inflated their costs all the way, and beyond.

Heh, umm no Kobe Tai... there are no hookers.

"Dojo's" is a great healthy Asian influenced restaurant across the street from NYU.

oh cause u said
"You'll understand when you get here. "

I assumed the wink had to do with women or hookers or something... cause sometimes they stand on the street...
I just have a dirty mind, everytime i see u post i just automatically think of hookers.... or that you have hookers on the mind.. or something similar.

Their "soy burger dinners" made me the man I am today! I always added avocado and muenster cheese for $.50 each.

You can get a place in union city or weehawken if you don't make a lot of money. just jump on the path train or the fairy.. I found when i worked and lived o then island i paid almost as much in parking for two garages as I did on rent.

a few years ago it was 1400 for tiny little studio apartment on e50th and 1st I had two garages on either side that I paid for at the time, but i don't imagine you'll need that. But one garage was about 400-600 a month depending on where it is. Food isnt bad, but don't expect to find any big discount grocery stores like shoprite or a&p. on the birght side of that is that you have every food you could possibly want, and just about EVERYTHING can be delivered including your laundry service. I do miss that.

I liked living across the river in the hoboken-weehawken area when I was younger. You have access to more rural shopping and the city is only 15 mins away.
