Half of the nation's children under 5 are racial or ethnic minorities, and the percentage is increasing mainly because the Hispanic population is growing so rapidly, according to a census report released today.

Hispanics are the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority group. They accounted for 49 percent of the country's growth from 2004 to 2005, the report shows. And the increase in young children is largely a Hispanic story, driving 70 percent of the growth in children younger than 5. Forty-five percent of U.S. children younger than 5 are minorities.

The new numbers offer a preview of demographic shifts to come, with broad implications for the nation's schools, workforce and Social Security.

One in three Americans is now a member of a minority group, a share that is bound to rise, because the non-Hispanic white population is older and growing much more slowly. The country already is engaged in a national debate about how government should respond to growing immigration, legal and illegal.

I can't speak for anyone else in this thread, but it's not the skin color I'm afraid of. Rather, I'm more worried about how long a place can sustain such an influx of immigrants (regardless of where they are from) before internal systems to help maintain a location are exhausted and eventually break down.

Well, we're going on about 190 years now, since the second wave of immigration to America. 400 since the first. So far, so good. Our financial system is based on growth, we need immigration. Without growth our system colapses, not the other way around.

probably because these "crucial" immigrants who drive down labor costs also require government subsidies to maintain a balance. you think the dishwasher around the corner who's doing a job "Americans wont do" can afford to fully support his family? doubtful considering the high cost of housing and medical care. go to walmart on the 1st or 15th and see who has 14 shopping carts full of shit and is paying with their welfare card or take a trip to your local ER and see whos waiting there to see a doctor because they have a headache. the reality is immigrants today are more often then not a drain on government resources because business owners can easily exploit them leaving a gap between their wages and bills.
