Got out of Knee surgery yesterday. My comeback promise to Phoenix.

Originally, the surgeon told me that I would be in pain, but compared it with "a little worse than when I actually tore the ACL and walked on it without crutches..." That was at the Soiree in Phoenix. It hurt bad and I should have been on crutches, but I made it without them.

However, when he went in, he found that the Meniscus was also messed up, causing the surgery to extend beyond the predicted 1:30 (hours) to 2:30. They also, of course, rebuilt the ACL using my hamstring. I am getting a lot of pain in there as well due to the fact that they tied it back up.

I am laid up and I can't move or sleep. The vicodin is pretty much useless to be honest. I go back in tomorrow and they are supposed to flex the knee and drain the fluids with a needle, I am confident that this will help.

However at this moment, I can honestly say that this is some of the worst pain I have ever had. I can't move for the most part, I need ropes just to pull the leg up to elevation status. They delivered me an ice machine, I am currently attached to it.

However, let it be known, I intend to put up big numbers at next year's Phoenix Forum basketball game. I am already planning what I shall add to my arsenal.

Thanks to those of you that helped me out in Phoenix this year. I look forward to getting recovered and seeing everyone again.

Wow! Cory... I can't believe all you've gone through with your knee. But I do know that is a tough injury.

Here's hoping for a quick and full recovery.

I had the surgeon take pictures of my knee opened up.

I should get them tomorrow.

I may sell them on Ebay.

Good luck Cory. ACL's are a bitch for the first couple months, but after that its clear sailing as long as you work hard at the rehab.

I had a cadaver used to fix my ACL instead of the hamstring. Got somebodies achilies tendon instead. Helped alot with the intial pain, but extended rehab a month or so they said because the tendon had to graft to the bone.

He took a whole day to shave himself for the surgery... other than his eyebrows and chin he is hairless.

This is A LOT rougher than I anticipated. I take pain well, but this has definitely tested me.

I had my hamstring done because I was nervous I would have a reaction.

Sounds like you are doing well now which is a good thing for me to hear.

Hey good luck to you man. I had the same exact surgery about 3 years ago! Meniscus and ACL. The recovery was HORRIBLE and I know your pain. It's a painful surgery. I wasn't able to get out of bed for a month because the pain was horrible and when I finally did WOW what a feeling! The blood rushed to my leg when I stood up pretty much paralizing it. It felt 100 times worse than when your leg falls asleep....same feeling, just more intense. I think it took me about 6 months to stop limping while walking and to lose the crutches completely. 1 year to be able to run slowly. Now 3 years later the leg is perfect except for a few minor things.

What sucks now is that the knee area is still numb. The skin is like dead there to feeling. And if I touch the scar I can feel it in my lower leg not on the scar itself. The nerves realigned themselves in a strange way. And the scar is still sensitive....kind of like a bruise. SO if it gets hit the right way, you feel it.

I live in NY so humidity is pretty high. Only recently did I stop actually feeling the effects of humidity. If you live in a dry area, you won't know what I mean so don't worry. If you do, you will get pain when it gets humid. But like I said, right now I pretty much don't get that anymore. I do alot of excercise and run alot so it helped heal the leg.

Best advice, take it easy...don't go playing sports for at least a year until your leg heals nicely, otherwise it can tear again. Don't run or jog for now, use excercise machines to build the muscle. RUnning is very hard on your joints. Stick with thephysical therapy. It sucks in the beginning especially doing the stretches. I know right now you can barely reach a 45 degree bend. It took I think about 2 years to get full stretch where I can reach my butt with my foot again.

Best of luck to you man!

Oh man, wow.

That is a long recovery!

To be honest though, the pain is bad now. It feels as though I will never walk on it again.

And then there are some of us who never recovered completely lol.

Cory, I have done what you did not to one, but to both damn knees. It sucks. Hopefully you will gain 100% use of it over time. It is a long recovery time but if you really work at it, you can get your knee back to the best shape possible. In the meantime it is going to hurt like hell and you are going to curse it because it will seem like the damn thing will never heal...but it will

I have to be honest, I didn't realize the fight I would be up against.

I can't do one thing for myself, that includes bathing. I feel totally useless.

But I am already doing the rehab...hell spins, etc....even though the pain is horrible.

I can't imagine doing it in both.

It's pretty crazy you were up and walking around on it later that night. Not a minor injury by any means. My girlfriend's brother busted his ACL playing basketball too...he said the first three days after the surgery are really rough, but it improves pretty quickly after that. The only difference between you two was that the guy guarding him was actually within 10 feet of him.

seriously, hope it gets better soon man.

Hi Sweetie Pie, sorry to hear you're in so much pain. If you need anything at all I am 20 minutes away! I know you are in good hands but can bring whatever you need so your private nurse doesn't have to leave you alone. Feel better baby! Watch porn, it will take your mind off it a little.

I am on day 2, and confirm, it is tough. I was reading today that many people just wish they had stayed in the hospital.

I will get better, but damn, for now, it is tough.

Thanks,

Were you working with a doctor and physical therapist? I was up day two on crutches at doctors orders. Physio was on day 3. No crutches after 10 days. Running by month 3. Cuts by month 4-5 or something like that. Cleared for all activities at month 6 checkup.

I had the Canadian National SKi team surgeon do mine and he was very adimant that I work it from the start. Wanted me walking to the bathroom on day 1 but I couldnt do that.

I can't imagine doing it in both.
That is great that you are already doing the therapy. That is huge. Hopefully your therapist is good and gets your Range of Motion back as soon as possible. Nothing worse than trying to ride the bike and your knee cant get all around but the pain is crazy. Or when the therapist is pushing your heel to your ass while you are on your stomach. You want to punch her so bad.

But so worth it to get the ROM back asap.

Axeman, not sure if you had just acl or just the meniscus. If you have both, the recovery is much harder than having just one done.

That being said, I did have one of the best surgeons in NY do mine and also worked with physical therapists, although I admit I did slack on therapy because of the pain.

I do think your timeline is somewhat exaggerated though. I absolutely can not see how it would be possible to run 10 days after the surgery. Not even ball players can do that unless they inject roids and pain killers into it. Again sounds like you had only ONE of the things done, because I have heard of quick recoveries from either or alone.

Either that or you are like wolverine or something Either way, if it's true, I'm happy for you because the pain is terrible.

I too went home the night of the surgery in a wheel chair and I crawled up the stairs of my house. Once inside I passed out on the floor from the pain and exhaustion from getting myself in.

And don't feel bad about not being able to do anything. I couldn't even get out of bed to shit LOL. I ate very little so I wouldn't have to. By the end of the recovery I had lost 30lbs LOL From 170 to 140. NICE!

Cory, don't do what my relatives did. They didn't take the therapy seriously.

It seems surgeons cut you, then throw you to the wolves. Get some good therapists, and follow their instructions and don't try to be *superman* and do too much too soon. You sound like my basketball hall of fame uncle who recently injured his knee. Take it easy.

Speedy recovery.
