apparently you haven't seen Alfa Romeo cars in 70s. Also most of the exotic sport cars have italian engine. Maserati, buggati,ferrari, lamborghini.

Alas, apart from driving a Ferrari 308 and a 355 the only experience I have of Italian engines is of multiple rides in a friend's Fiat 126. I only have to hear a buzzing noise of a similar pitch and I get flashbacks... :(

Italian engines are either superb or utter crap. Unfortunately most of the good ones are in cars I'll never get to experience...

Dont forget these are cars of massive production and Italians try to compete with korea and japan in prices. Not easy thing to achive! But general speaking, cars like alfa romeo and lancia have great engines. Fiat GT has great engine too and of course Fiat Punto isn't a small ferrari like they won't to show on commercials ;)
