Widescreen monitors ... whats so good about them?

no really, what's the advantage of getting a widescreen LCD monitor over a regular one?

I'm looking around for a 19" or 20" ... thinking about going for a DELL one.

The main advantage i can think about is that you can watch 16:9 movies better on a widescreen monitor ... but I use my computer to work on porn ... if i want to watch a movie i rather watch it on my big ass TV isntead of a 20" monitor LOL

I mean, doesn't it screw up layouts from sites or anything?

I also read it's used to have 2 applications open next to eachother, well it's more like 1 fully open and the other one half ... if you really want that, why not just get a dual-monitor.

Am i overlooking something, or is this widescreen stuff so overrated?

Not actually true ... a wide screen monitor usually has LESS heigh pixels but more width ... so for instance, a 1280x1024 19" Screen has MORE pixels than a 1440x900 screen. BUT... I have a wide screen (used to have 4:3 screen) because when I work in Photoshop, I find the layout easier and more efficient for me.

It's each to thier own... not something people should have pre-defined ideas about. Go try different screens for your needs.

If you dedicate a widescreen monitor to just watch movies/dick around on, and have another one or two for pure work, then it's great. Otherwise widescreen monitors totally suck ass imo.

I think the key is working space. with dual 4/3 monitors I had to run my photoshop tools in the second monitor, and with flash I had everything like the timeline, tools, properties etc in the second monitor. with dual widescreens I'm able to place more tools and sometimes all the tools and browsers on the first monitor.

although a sqaure monitor is better for me when working with 16x9 video. this allows me to preview the video and have tools around the video. where with a widescreen, it take up more of the desktop.

then again i don't think i would buy a monitor that only had 900h resolution.

I have a 24"(1920x1200) acer. Fucking awsome if you're into gaming and have a system to handle it at highrez. Was about my only reason for buying it instead of a normal 4:3

I looked at all the sizes in person before buying and 24" was about the smallest wide screen I would recommend. Because as twisted mentioned the height isn't all the great on the 19-21"

Otherwise if you just want more desktop a couple 19-20's would probably be a better choice. They're coming down in price quite a bit. I might pick up a 19" widescreen to run in portrait mode for stats and shit.

I use 2 21" monitors, side by side. I can't imagine going back to a single monitor. In fact, I'm thinking of moving to 2 bigger monitors.

I have a 20.5 inch Dell widescreen, and I love it. It may be all in my head, but the widescreen seems to give me less headaches, for some reason.

You do get more usable workspace, example you can keep icq wide open plus more shit without a problem ;)

Can someone recommend a good dual AGP video card that doesn't cost and arm and a leg and will drive two VGA ports.

a decent start if you dont wanna game too crazy is a simple dual head ATI Radeon card.. The cheapest of which that still will play simple games is the old SE version.. But now they have all these new naming schemes.
