i dont know about El Salvador, but Iran-iraq war and Russians in Afghanistan they had nothing to with. Maybe came in at the very end to put their name on it and in both cased after 10 years of fighting where both sides were tired fighting for no real cause.

Like i said, what major or even minor conflict has UN solved ??

look at PLO, they were kicked out of Lebanon in 70ties by Israel and they were able to left and survive only due international arrangments, yet the battle at Beirut was seen as their victory in Arab world.
