Depending on the application and how you will be running your queries you may need a multi-server setup, but it all depends on how much performance you are looking for. Either way you definitely need to get a dedicated server so that you can tune the MySQL to your likings based on how your code/queries/dbs perform. You need a dedicated server.
If you're a cheap ass, you can try dreamhost. promo code gofuckyourself will give you free setup fee. You will experience downtimes once in a while, and support tickets take a long time.
