What is the sales tax on used cars where you live?

I'm looking to buy next car in the US and take advantage of the low USD$, I was just wondering what the state and federal taxes are on used cars in different states.

For anyone interested, there is no duty on cars that are made or assembled in the US, and if it's an import then there's a 6% duty. I figure I can save close to 30% depending on the car.

In NY state, it depends on the sales tax of the county you purchase in.

I'll be purchasing it in the US, not sure which state though. It will be plated in Montreal so I'm not worried about the reg. fee's.

I always wanted to visit Canada..

Buy the car from NH or Ma & I will pick it up & drive it to you for a fee + gas, & expenses .. NH offers 10 day temporary registrations for transporting newly purchased vehicles.. Also, NH is a no insurance required state.

All you have to pay is the GST and PST for any car that is manufactured or assembled in the US, so almost any Domestic model, I believe the 3 series BMW is assembled there as well. For any imports they charge you a 6% duty.

I figure I can but the car, drive it for a year and flip it for a profit or atleast not have it cost me anything to drive

In NYS you pay the sales tax when registering the car at the DMV. If buying from a dealer, they handle it with the registration.

I'm not that far from NH, I look forward to flying down to wherever and taking a road trip back up.

if you buy the car in the usa for shipment to canada, there should be no state sales tax..

This is Canada but here's a good laugh.......
so long as you are not buying a car.
In Ontario 8% provincial tax and 6% goods and service tax on new or used from a dealer.
If you buy used private you only pay the 8% provincial but the tax is either the sale price you paid or the Govt book value (whatever is higher)
in other words you buy a car for 5k Govt says it is worth 9 you pay tax on 9k but if you buy a car for 9k and the Govt book says it is only worth 5 you still pay tax on the 9
To add injury to insult you have to buy a used car buyers package from them another 20 bucks to transfer the vehicle.
just a total rip off.
