We tried to invade Vietnam.
A massive war took place. We used all of our bombing capability and needed a mandatory draft to have satisfactory troop levels.
In the end, we had to run away.
That's called them kicking the shit out of us. Death count is irrelevant. We lost the war, to a bunch of poor peasants.
Americans aren't going to mobilize and go balls out over stupid wars of imperialism. That's why we're going to loose in Iraq. At some point the American people say, fuck this, we're not going to keep dying to see the super rich in our country get richer.
The Vietnamese and Iraqi's on the other hand, are fighting against colonial oppressors. They're fighting for their country to be free. Of course they'll fight to the last man. Just like we'd do if someone where invading us.
The US can kick ass when we have to. WWII, we whipped the shit out of the japs, because they actually threatened us. We could probably kick the shit of of China if they threatened us in the same way. But we'll never win a major war of imperialism. Imperialism isn't practical in modern society. Not when we can see the tyranny being delivered in our name every day on TV. Ok well, maybe not on US TV, but on satellite, and the internet.
It was easy for the British to be a colonial power, because the people couldn't see the attrocracies first hand.
