Restaurants that make you tip for your takeout (rant)

So I ordered takeout tonight from a local sushi joint and when I picked it up I was told, "Julia will be taking care of you". "Taking care of me" apparently means walking across a restaurant with my bag of sushi and presenting me with a bill, then staring me down as I pay. They make it seem as if I was being waited on. Of course they make you pick it up at the bar. Since I eat at this place every now and then, I added about 15-20% to not be considered "a cheap dickhead" and avoid the risk of having my future sushi be compromised.

This "tipping for takeout" setup is common in most sit-down restaurants these days. Even places like the olive garden make you feel obligated to tip by sending a bartender to get your order.

Its not my fault these fucking places don't deliver. I have no problem tipping a guy who is bringing the food to my door. So as a reward for driving my ass over to their establishment, spending money on their food, I am hit for another 15-20% because somebody hands me a bag and takes my money.

Does anybody else find this scenario kind of lame?

I happily tip at least 20%+ to any decent waiter but I feel like tossing 2 bucks at the "takeout bag passers" same as if they cracked open my beer bottle. It never fails that they usually get their 20% because if there is one thing I know, its not smart to upset people who handle your food.

I totally agree with you. I still tip them though - same as you, don't want my sushi screwed with.

But what really pisses me off is when you go to a coffee place or fast food joint and they have a tip jar on the counter. Are you kidding me!!!!! If you want tips, go work at a REAL restaurant where you have to put a little more effort into it beyond "you want fries with that?"

Do you drawn a line through the part of the bill that leaves a space and says "tip" or just leave it blank? Me thinks drawing a line could result in your next order containing a secret ingredient.

hm...i don't think any reciepts I have ever gotten have had that line to be honest...maybe if I used credit cards, but I don't

there is NO reason to tip a take out person, I order takeout for the main reason that I don't have to deal with that shit

I always tip on pick up deliveries but more like 10%. I don't think they should get the full tip when they did not do the full service. But since they do have to claim your order on their wages they are going to get taxed on a percentage of your order. Really the restaurant themselves should pick this order up so the waiter doesn't nabbed for it but like that is really going to happen.

most of the restaurants in our area send you to the bar when you pick up your order, and the bartender takes care of it all

they literally go to the kitchen, grab a bag, and drop it in front of me....yeah, right, that is really deserving of a tip..LOL

park my car if you want a tip, don't drop a bag in front of me

Noticed these variances all over biftek..

EU is more inclined to a 10% level (unless there is something special).

Others can say, but US seems to be more 20%+. The "apparent" justification is the restaurants pay fuck all to staff and tis the method of them earning. Flip side is the food bill is usually less anyways.

Other countries - 10% is auto-added to the bill for service.

well here in aus , the only 10% added is for tax (gst, goods and serverices tax) ,gst gets paid to the government not the employer or employee

Once i bought a giftcard from a nice restaurant for a present and put it on my visa...all the girl did was swipe my card and hand me the giftcard...and of course on the visa receipt, theres a blank line thats supposed to be for the tip...i put a zero there because its freakin ridiculous to think anybody should get a tip for swiping a credit card. But i still don't know if i was "supposed" to leave a tip.
Honestly, i don't see why people working in restaurants get tips at all. Or if they get tips, why don't other people who work in places that serve others also get tips? My first few jobs were all crappy customer service jobs where i KNOW i had to deal with just as much, if not more, shit than a waiter or bartender. I just don't get it...

I never ever tip for anything. Ffs when I do my job, I don't see anyone walking upto me and giving me another 20%.

The area they circle on the bill with 'Tip _______________ ' makes me want to smash their faces in!

Exactly, saves the bullshit. May seem cheap, but restaurants here charge what they need to pay their staff an appropriate wage without relying on tips. I guess that's why Aussie's are considered cheap in the US though lol.

i normally tip about %10 on takeout ... a sushi place i'd probably tip maybe %15..

there is preperation involved in them doing the takeout, and especially at a sushi restaurant... i think the waitress has to tip out the chef at the end of the night.

if i can tip 1 dollar or 2 on a 5 dollar beer at a bar, i can tip atleast %10 on some food.

Some places now require you to pay tipping. If you do not pay, you will go to jail.

?LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. - A New York City man accused of leaving an inadequate tip at a restaurant was arrested, fingerprinted and photographed for a mug shot.

Humberto A. Taveras, 41, faces a misdemeanor charge of theft of services after he and his fellow diners argued with Soprano's Italian and American Grill managers over the legality of requiring an 18 percent tip for large parties.

"They chased us down like a bunch of criminals," Taveras said. "It killed our weekend."

Taveras and eight others had pizza at the restaurant Sunday night. He told the Glens Falls Post-Star they weren't completely satisfied with the food and left a tip of under 10 percent. Taveras said they also were not told of a mandatory 18 percent gratuity for parties of six or more and did not see notice of it on their menus.

Restaurant owner Joe Soprano said all the menus have the notice, and the waitress informed the group. He said he did not choose to pursue charges because of the money, but because Taveras' group was obnoxious.

"It's unfortunate it has come to this, but this guy was rude and abrasive. They practically threw food at us," Soprano said.

Taveras plans to fight the charge. He was issued an appearance ticket and was scheduled to appear in town court Thursday.

The arrest raises the issue of whether the gratuities that restaurants automatically tack on for serving large groups are legally enforceable debts.

Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland said he did not believe the issue had been litigated before in New York. He said the case could turn on whether the person is notified of the tip requirement beforehand.

"It's not a black-and-white issue," Cleveland said. "It will be very interesting to see where it goes in court."?

I refuse to eat at a restaurant that forces you to tip, thankfully there are only a handful of restaurants like that where I live. I always tip proportionally to the service that I receive while eating at a restaurant. If I am treated badly I will not tip a high percentage at all, if I am not attended to at all I will refuse to leave a tip period. That?s what a TIP means, it?s not something that should be just given without using an ounce of brain power. You should always tip directly based on how the service (food, attendance to your needs, time waiting for food, etc.) is to you. You don?t owe them any favor ? you are paying for the food/drinks, if they want a tip they need to work for it. The majority of places I eat at, the service is superb so I will always leave a 20 to 25% tip for them.

Having run 5 restaurants i can tell you the waiters who "hand you your food for takeout" are still obligated by law to pay the government 8% of the declared sales totals each night as taxes. So if they give you your takeout, usually it is on their sales totals for the night. If they don't get a tip from you, then they lose money for serving you. Is that fair? No. Is it fair for you to tip 15% for a takeout meal, I agree that it isn't. I feel matching their governmental obligations by tipping 8% is adequate. I usually tip 10% to cover that and a little more for the small amount of effort in serving you takeout.

When eating in a restaurant i normally tip anything from $0.00 for awful foor and worse service, to 100% of the bill or more for amazing service and food. Sometimes when this happens next time you go back, you get all kinds of freebies, and get treated like the president....that's worthwhile.

maybe you should work as a waitress for a week and then see if you think assholes like your self who think "i don't need to tip" are just that, assholes...

i was a cook in a resturant for 2 years and the waitress' do ALOT more then just "bring you your food" also they don't make much, who the fuck wants to bust their ass for selfish pricks who are to lazy to give a dollar or 2 to someone serving their food, for only $5 an hour?

yeah thats right, waitress' don't make much, thats why they take tips, because with tips, they make their money... girls i worked if they never got tips, they would work a whole 10 hours for less then $50 a day... is that worth it to you? i doubt you would still have that job if you only made that...

with tips they make between $10 and $15 an hour... thats if they get to KEEP all the tips... alot of places put the tips in a huge jar and split it between all waitress', waiters, and dishwashers... where some require the waitress to split their tips with the dishwashers, thats it...

and yeah, maybe if you stop being an asshole and tip them you wouldn't need to worry about someone spitting in your food... I always tip be it just picking up a cheese burger or if i go sit down and have a 3 course meal... i tip... because tips are what makes their jobs pay decent, unlike you pricks who sit on your ass infront of a computer and look at naked chicks all day for money, they actually bust their asses hardcore for their measily money, and thats just at that job, alot of waitress' work 2 to 3 jobs just to beable to pay their rent for their 1 bedroom rundown appartment that costs way to fucking much ...

it never even crossed my mind to tip for takeout. most places have a girl right behind a register they just get your food and hand it to you. no more than a mcdonalds employee would do, and i don't tip them. they should just charge slightly more for the takeout if they want the extra money.

The tip space is on every receipt by default. Obviously you can ignore it. If I don't feel like tipping I sign it really quick and look hurried or distracted and leave the tip field blank and don't total it. Makes it appear to be accidental.

The reason why you should tip at Olive Garden, Chilis, etc is because the person that is giving you your food is the one that puts it together. They aren't just handing it to you, they usually take your order (on the phone) submit it, box it, give you all of the things you need and take care of the bill. On top of that, consider that during the day they are making less then they would if they were working a table and if they are not tipped it's going to be a really shitty day. It doesn't have to be a huge tip, but something is nice. They are basically doing everything that they would normally do, minus giving you drinks and refills... although sometimes they do offer you a drink (for free) at places like Chilis and Applebees if you have a wait.

I used to not tip for takeout until I met a girl that was a server and she told me how it all worked. Now I do.

As someone who has both bartended and waitressed, I appreciate what tips mean to workers in those industries, and I'm generally a very good tipper.

That said, I can't imagine tipping for carry out.

At a grocery store or a bank they are paid over minimum wage, at a restaurant they may be paid minimum wage or less. That is the difference.

The one place were tipping seems to be common that I frown upon is at coffee shops. Considering they make more then fast food workers, are treated better, and usually even have benefits at big chains like Starbucks. I'd feel guilty tipping a Starbucks employee and not a McDonalds employee.

As was mentioned before in this thread. Customers not tipping or being rude should NEVER be an excuse to spit or otherwise compromise someone's meal. That's just trashy and fucked up.

why the hell is that our fault? if they want more money go get a better job and if you can't get a better job get a better education. i pay enough taxes that goes to welfare and such, we can't be expected to support everybody. i tip well when im eating in a resturant but i think the whole idea that we should help because their employers don't pay them enough is stupid, they're the real pricks.
