I want to fly to Calgary but don't have a passport. Can I use my U.S. Birth certificate?

Passport is best, and it will be required in 2008.

But you can use your birth certificate and government issued photo ID such as a drivers licence.

I live in Canada and went to Vegas with a birth certifictate and photo ID. And got back in.

I know you can come here with those 2 but getting back ... you'll have to ask your customs and borders department. You should be able to but check to be sure.

Yes you do. Our family friends have owned a vacation home in Canada for the last 20 years, which they can now no longer visit because of some stupid shopplifting shit they did when they were about 19.

They are not happy about the new border laws, to say the least.

Because until recently (the last year or so) U.S. Citizens did not need a passport to go to Canada, and Vice Versa. You just went to the border, showed your Drivers License, answered a few questions and were on your way.

I still don't get why people like you shoot your mouth off without knowing what you're talking about.

Nobody needed passports between US and Canada if they were citizens of either country and it is only after 911 that this will change. I'm just not sure of the date it changes.

Was the shoplifting committed in Canada or US?

People love to talk and give out advice.

Who cares about facts? Or being correct?

But do get a passport. They are good for 10 years in the US.

For the simple fact that you can travel between the US and Canada without a passport.

I went to the US 3 times last year with a birth certificate and photo ID.

Thanks.

We had simular rules here in Europe but since 9/11 everything changed. Even though I can travel anywhere they do random checks everywhere. And going to the UK nowadays is worse then goin to the US, apart from the strip theyre almost zero percentage checks.

It changed everywhere, so itll change CA/US border control too.

Maybe you should keep to talking about foie gras and being a snotty Euro.

Before 9/11, all you needed was a driver's license and proof of citzenship to go back and forth from Canada to US, expired US passports were also allowable.

I am speaking from experience.

This thread seems to be more about how little paperwork is needed to squeeze into other country and get back.

It's odd how few people on this thread "appear" not to even have a passport. That says a lot.

Totally agree Paul - get a passport, - kinda basic stuff and who knows when you may need it.

I get the same stupid questions re entry to Costa Rica and other countries - "Do I need a passport?" Well... yeah, they have benefits

Nice memory.

What bout having ID on yself? Do Canadians need to have that in the US and vice versa? Cause I can literally walk into Belgium but if they ask ID and I cannot show it Im fucked, theyll fine me or take me in. And there are more EU (also Schengen) countries who have that.

I had to do it, I actually don't harbor any ill feelings.

If we ever meet at Vegas or Florida, we will have a foie gras dinner, I know great places in both cities.

In accordance with a new United States law, from January 1, 2006, all American citizens re-entering their homeland from this and other regions must be in possession of a valid US passport!

I've been through the US border this year and not even asked for ID.
I get way more hassle form the Canadian side, and I'm Canadian. I go at least 6 times a year.

Birth Certificate or Citizenship card and Photo ID is all that's needed for now. Anything that proves citizenship. Till the new rules come into effect.
