    How was this .GIF made?

    the actual image size 244x166. the red logo sits inside a larger box which has a transparent background. place this image on a page and no matter what the background color is the image outside of the red square will show the background color.

    HOW IS THAT DONE?

              The area that isn't seen is called "transparent". It is done by telling the image "let that area be transparent".
