Major Internet providers to scan email attachments for child porn

    Here's the link:

    http://www.nwfdailynews.com/articleA...pchildporn.php

Apparently, AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft, EarthLink and NetZero are getting together and developing technology to catalog CP images and then scan all email attachments passing through their servers looking for a match.

While I applaud anything that helps to eliminate CP, I wonder how long it will be before they start using the same technology to scan for "obscene" images (as in Extreme Associates)?

Once again, Gonzalez is framing everything in the context of protectiion of children, but it looks like yet another wolf in sheep's clothing.

We are getting closer and closer to Orwell's world.

So, they'll have the world's biggest collection of CP?

I guess they're above the law.

wouldnt it be easier, smarter and cheaper to block hosting companies IP ranges that support this type of thing? After a year of running this type of blocking/blacklist system, isps will start governing themselves (from loss of customers) for hosting such filth.

The problem with the above system is actual humans need to sort through content to make the systems work in the first place.

At least they'll catch most of it ;)

And why would any adult webmaster want poeople to email each other their content ?

          Seriosly ...

This makes total sence when it comes to removing a part of the CP from the net...

They won't catch anything. It's all bullshit marketing schemes so parents who are dealing with myspace teenies will switch over and somehow feel "protected". - truth.

Dude even if they catch 5 % of what's going on there it's a good move ...

This has more chances of working then most of the bullshit they setup so far.

So... doesn't anyone else see the problem with this?

As in, how easy it would be for the ISPs (or the justice dept, working under secret cover, as they've done with the phone companies) to also scan emails for images that are protected speech/expression, claim they're obscene, and use the data they've illegally gathered to either harrass or threaten webmasters, surfers, etc?

I'm inclined to believe that it's mostly like the dog-and-pony show surrounding airport security... do a whole bunch of crap that serves no real purpose, but gives the illusion that something is being done to make the skies safer.

If they *really* wanted to deal with CP, they would first address the fact that 2257 makes absolutely no provision whatsoever to determine the age of the model when the content was shot and they would dump all of the other stuff which has no bearing on CP.

Yes, it's great that they are filtering for CP, but my biggest worry is that it won't stop there.

It does make me laugh when webmasters constantly whine about how the big bad government is against them, and place all the blame on said government rather than doing the intelligent thing and looking at it from all angles.

As long as the industry is represented in the public eye by spammers, scammers and those who will push porn on people who do not want it at that particular moment, you will all be under scrutiny.

Why not show how responsible you all are by squeezing out the spammers and the scammers and the low-lifes and watch the government heat drop right off. At the moment though it seems that the online adult industry cannot police it's own, and therefore the government will do it for you.

You can flame me as much as you like for this post, but it won't stop the government scrutinising your activities - only you can do something to stop that.

thats awesome, now rogue mailers and general shitheads that just want to mess with people can just start sending random CP images and small vid clips to people they don't even know. that outta cause some innocent people trouble. there was a time when my webmaster @ address used to get bombed by like 3000 spams a day, lots of them from emails advertising lolita and cp. i guess that they don't know that people who traffic in that shit know where to find it and how to share it anonymously.

Wasn't there a post recently that listed the revenue in porn and claimed CP to be a 3 billion $ industry? Kinda large number to believe. But there is prolly $ in it. Doubt that it will ever be stopped really. As long as there is bucks in it, someone will take it offshore or someplace where they can get away with it.

The dumb ones will end up getting caught. Maybe that's worth while.

I agree that the whole concept is a slippery slop. First CP which everyone agrees is bad, then raunchy porn, then BDSM, then the rest of us.

I think you are beeing paranoid there.

Try brigning a blade at the airport then.

The problem is that there is always a way arround what the GOV do. No people bring coke over planes anymore ... they do it through the waters, and the fucking mafia owns the docks (they take 10 % of the shit... all the other organisation have to pay them). In MTL it's the Irish that have been doing that for ever.

There is always a work arround for everything.

Personally, I don't see any problem with surfers not beeing able to email each other some stolen porn.
