Shock treating your pool
Ok, I got my kids one of those soft-sided pools to cool off in this summer. Today looks like it's going to be unexpectedly hot and I found algae taking over the pool this morning, so I had to shock-treat with chlorine. Most info I've found says to wait "overnight" before swimming after shock treatment; we don't want to wait until tomorrow.
Does anyone know how many hours it takes? |

use the 9600 rule
C xT = 9600 where C= available chlorine and T= time in minutes if your chlorine level is at 2ppm (parts per million) then you would need 2xT=9600, 9600/2=T T=4800 minutes or 80 hours. You can shorten the time by increasing the Cl level but do not exceed 20ppm so if you went to 10ppm, 9600/10=960=16 hours. This is the time to kill the bacteria, such as cryptosporidia, etc. the time until you can stand the chlorine is up to you after the 9600 time is up. I knew that fuckin biology degree would pay off. |

ps, algae is not likely to hurt them, but it's not much fun to swim in murky water.
you could always drain it, clean it, and refill it. but that will probably take several hours anyway. |

The overnight rule is pretty basic when you shock. You should not shock during the day either, the reason being is the sun will eat the clorine up. Just put a little bit of chlorine in every night and the pool should stay clear.

That's almost disturbing ![]() I was going to say that a couple of weeks ago I went for a swim at Matrix Norman's place in the wee hours of the day after his pool guy had attacked..... Tasted and felt like a big lump of chlorine for hours afterward - even with a shower !!! So I would say 2 days at best. That I like to call "street biology". ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
