Memo to Microsoft: 'If I Were You...'

Memo to Microsoft: 'If I Were You...'

Where should the world's largest software provider focus its energies?

Beyond the PC, said O?Kelly. "Not that the PC is dead." Xbox and Origami, the Ultra Mobile Personal Computer (UMPC) platform it unveiled to make Windows computers as ubiquitous as mobile phones, all point to mobility as future growth for Microsoft, according to the analyst.

For others, the advice is to go back to the future.

"Vista is the future," Stahlman added. "Microsoft is an operating system company and Vista is their product. Everything else depends on it and everything else hangs off it."

I just finished reading "Hard Drive" about the early days of M$.

Trust me, these guys haven't even geared up. Next up is IPTV, where you'll get your TV channels through your TV.

If Microsoft was smart they would come up with a software program that would allow one to move their entire desktop software installation over to new hardware seamlessly without having to reinstall. This would encourage more PC sales and save lots of people time and money!

Apple already does this. I'm sure Microsoft will copy soon. They always do.

Even the cheapest wal-mart computer comes with a 80 GB hard drive. Hell Ipods come in 60 GB models. Most $1000 PCs come with at least 250 GB hard drives. That's 1/4 of a terra byte. In 5 years you average PC will come with a 1 TB hard drive. 12 GB is nothing.

Vista will be a success. As long as they keep coming pre-installed there's no way to stop it from being the de-facto OS.
I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

Linux will soon become the dominating operating system for home users. (minus the people that spend $1,500 on a pc to check their email :/)

IBM or HP (forget now) where coming out with a line of PC's with linux already installed but I guess that deal feel through.

Or you could just be smart about it and do the right thing - back up your computer often. I store all of my most important files in one folder and back them up every weekend. All of my websites and everything else of importance is backed up online.

If my computer ever dies I just get a new run and keep rolling.

WRONG. Linux has been out for YEARS and It's been FREE and yet has never been able to get a foothold despite supposedly being better. Hmmmmmm. How can that be? Might as well say Mac are going to outsell PCs.

IBM or HP (forget now) where coming out with a line of PC's with linux already installed but I guess that deal feel through.
Considering IBM sold their PC unit to some China company I doubt it's them.

Considering IBM sold their PC unit to some China company I doubt it's them.
Then again.. no one in the linux space has really tried to go after the desktop, except for a couple half-baked, poorly funded start-ups. Linspire comes to mind. The big players that wouldve had even a fraction of a chance, didnt go there (RedHat, Suse), and are working towards it from the top down, by going for the server market first. Then mabye the corperate desktop. Then mabye the home users.

However, the linux desktop has matured a LOT in the past 3 or 4 years. I could see it as a common desktop OS in the future, more so than I could see OSX. To run OSX you have to buy a new computer.. with linux you dont (usually).

                                                            A) Linux has been around for years. Long enough for people to know about it.

                                                            B) Linux is FREE. Everytime Windows gets an upgrade it costs at least $100.

                                                            C) Linux is better ( supposdly, so let's go with that )

Now how can something that is better, cheaper and has been around for years and yet only be and a very very minute % of people's computers and yet some how it will magically "soon become the dominating operating system for home users."?

I mean think about it. With all those advantages, how come it's not dominant already? What has been holding it back? And is the situation that is holding back changed or is going to change anytime soon? I don't think so.

I hear they are pre-installing Firefox too on some desktop computers in the UK.. they like to dip their toe in the water with linux and open source everyonce in a while, but dont put a lot of marketing behind it. Probably more out of fear of pissing of MS, or using it as leverage to get concessions from MS.

Dell even offers Linux support.. they have a long standing relationship with Red Hat, actually.

They dont make the hardware, as far as I know. They promptly got sued by Microsoft because of the name and had to change it.
