Question for Canadians...

Can R-12 (the refrigerant found in most old cars) (once sold in the US under the trade name Freon) still be bought in your country without a permit legally? If so how readily is it available and for how much in CAD? What is the typical packaging? 1lb cans or 30lb cylinders or something else?

The treaty that prohibits the production of ozone-depleting substances, like freon, is called the Montreal Protocol. Guess where Montreal is ;)

Some countries have longer to get rid of CFCs than others. I have heard Venezuela is one. In the US, all you need is an EPA Sec 609 License (which I have) because no problem is too great so as not to be solvable with a bribe to the government. I am just too cheap to pay the prices here in the States; I am thinking I might be able to get the shit cheaper elsewhere. Yeah, yeah, importation is illegal too, I know.

But a little bit of smuggling, fencing and black market sales never hurt anyone. And besides, we all know it has nothing to do with the enviroment and evberything to do with getting us to by 134a conversion kits.
