alex, you should try being a referee, their decisions often can have whole nations against them and they recieve death threats, for people to have the courage to take on the responsibility of being hated by a whole nation that takes some balls.
If you dont believe me search for Urs Meier
As far as this tournement goes they are doing very well.
Portugal-England
In the Euro 2004 quarter-final between England and Portugal, with the score at 1-1, he disallowed a goal by Sol Campbell in the 89th minute due to a foul by John Terry on the Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira. The match ended in a tie, and Portugal proceeded to the next stage following a penalty shootout and reached the final (where it lost to Greece). It was a controversial decision and most English football fans saw no reason to disallow the goal. He received backing from UEFA for his decision. Television replays showed that Terry held Ricardo down, which prevented the goalkeeper from claiming the ball. Meier's decision was technically correct.
Many English fans reacted angrily. After his personal details were published by British tabloid newspapers, Meier received death threats, more than 16,000 abusive e-mails and even had an English flag placed at his home. As a result, he was placed under police protection.
He continued to receive FIFA appointments and referee in the Swiss top division until he reached the mandatory retirement age for each.
understand now. they are humans they make mistakes and when they do they get fucked. give them a break
That stuff happens in every game though. Just seems odd you'd call it randomly on that play. He was barely late and actually got ball first.
Not like this. And if it happens like this, it should be a red card. It's the rules.. tackle from behind = red. Most refs just don't dare to give a red card for it..
I think they should shove all the cards they gave up their ass. I just want to watch them play. Boo hoo, a little blood (okay, a lot...lol.... man my USA boy got popped).
First time watching soccer for me in about 4 years, used to watch a lot. Now, its like the NBA, bunch of faking and acting. It too hard to watch all that for me.

And by the way, I'm an Italian-American, so I win with a tie.

Yeah, it's why I really can't get into soccer much. Too many pussies taking dives and crying over being tripped. Just play the game and quit trying to take dives all match.
seemes like a lot of us disagree.. think the ref made 2 critical mistakes.. pope should have been sent off already in the first half.. last man tackle and thats a red.. don't see the tackle from mastroeni as a red, thats a yellow or we would have had a lot of reds for every game..
That was some damn shit! Not just cuz I am from USA - but for real, that shit was crap. I'd say the same thing if it had been Iran & whoever...
Fuck that crap!
All cards where right i thought but he let alot of fouls go aswell. Italians always play dirty so you expect ti from them but i think the USA's where just down to them being noobs.
I think every player that goes down and starts showing signs of pain and grabbing at their leg should just be taken out of the game entirely and substituted. Not a red card. Not an ejection. So not a penalty against anybody - but call it a 'precaution' for the player's well being.
I think this would stop all the players who try to fake an injury to earn a foul or get the other team a card. No more falling down and making it look like they broke something for the televisions and refs then getting back up running at full speed in 20 seconds.
