Why is the word "dude" such an insult to some people?

I grew up as a skater/surfer/punk and that was the word we used instead of "man", "bro" or "esse".....why are people so insulted when I call them "dude" on GFY?

Maybe they prefer dudette?

I think I put 'dude' in a few of my posts here and I didn't get a negative reaction.

I don't like beeing called "dude" or "bro". I don't really understand why one would use thoses childish expressions...

P.S. I don't mind it when it somebody use the word once in a while... but some abuse the words and that's what I'm talking about there.

something else I noticed, when I use that word when i am helping people they have no problem with it, but when I used it when I poking at them they have issue with it

for example:

if I say, "hey dude, hit me up, I can help you with that", I never hear anyone complain

but if I say "jeez dude, lighten up" then all the sudden people starts saying things like "I am not a dude, dude, I am 51 years old"

Dude is kind of a leveling word, like man and bro. Its meant to put you both on the same page, I guess some people don't like that and want more respect. I wouldn't call somebody I don't know any of those words. Bro, I can't stand. Typically I use man.

I call all my close and personal buddies 'bro' either because I've known them for ages or because I respect them like I would to my own brother. Similarly, I call all my close girl (space) friends 'sweetie' and also my girlfriend 'baby'.

I don't see anything childish with saying "Hey bro" to a buddy, "Hey sweetie" to a girl friend, and "Hey baby" to your own girlfriend.

I use 'dude' and 'man' interchangeably because I think it lightens the mood, especially if it's someone you've met before but you don't exactly remember their name or someone you don't know very well. It's a word I use as a sign of recognition.

If anyone gets offended because I call them "Hey dude" or "Hey bro" then I'd think to myself that the person isn't as friendly or is simply not used to it and remember not to use the phrase to them again until they get more accustomed to it.

You will typically only get that reaction from people that are freaking out about not being paid < $50, have to point out twice that they are a grandmother in one way or another and then blow off an affiliate rep until Monday when offered help.

She had her undies in a bunch, dude.

Bummer dude! People need to lighten up. I mean if a dude gets all pissed about what I call him I have to ask. "What the fuck is up DUDE!"

Seriously I have the same issue as I tend to use that word a lot myself... They just can't give a dude a break!!

BTW.. Where's my car?!?!

All of which represent a juvenile mentality and a lack of normal maturation. When a juvenile it is normal to speak in the terms used by that generations juveniles. When one becomes a mature adult it is normal to no longer speak as a juvenile speaks.

when u say dude u think, hippy, teenager, american myspace teen user. therefore if u call someone a dude who does not fall in that wide group, generally they think you are calling them one of those groups, which a big business man would not like to be called along the lines of a dope smoking pussy

I am assuming a tie and suit go with that mentality... This is hardly a corprate industry we are in, thus the ability to not have to be so damn stuffy all the time and talk like we would normally. Having to "act" to get respect is bullshit! Count me on my abilities not what I may wear or say...

BTW that responce was very bad karma Dude!

To assume that a tie and suit go with that mentality is a wrong assumption. To assume that one has matured into an adult and has set aside a juvenile mentality would be a correct assumption.

I say dude to everybody, male or female, old or young. I remember when I called my pastor dude... he just looked at me strange and was kinda perplexed as to the meaning of the word 'dude'. I love old people.

Not so much insulting as it is annoying. Depends on where you're from though I guess. Hey "man" tends to get used more around here. Although that phrase even seems to be getting restricted to pot smokers or younger kids.

One friend of mine uses "buddy" all the time.

"So I was over at buddy's house", or "hey buddy". I hate that.

He also uses "chief." I can easily see how chief would be insulting. Especially when he gets saying it in one of the local bars where the boys from the reserve like to hang out.
