Congress violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment by changing the Motto and the Pledge in the mid-1950s and adding a religious opinion to public currency and what was, up 'til then, a secular oath of patriotism.

That this took place at the behest of Christians in response to the "evil" of Communism during the Cold War is no more surprising than the addition of "In God We Trust" to some currency after the Civil War.

What's interesting is that Evangelical Christians have been trying to inject their beliefs into the Constitution since it was being written, and have gone so far as to blame times of national strife on God's punishing America for failing to recognize him in the supreme Law of the land.

Yes I see that now. I was in the mood for a good pissing match tonight. But I had him all wrong. He turned out to be an intellectual lightweight.

So how is not having 'In God We Trust' on your currency or not having a 10 Commandments monument in a courtroom be prohibiting the free exercise of religion?

The state is not an individual.

A church, denomination or sect is an establishment of religion in the same way as a school is an establishment of education, or a hotel is an establishment of hospitality; that is, an entity established for a specific purpose, activity, etc.""

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" prohibits the State from making laws with regard to (another definition of "respecting") sects, churches, denominations, whatever. By the same token, Congress is prohibited from making laws that favor one sect over another, or even belief over non-belief. UG and IGWT clearly favor Christians simply in using their deity's proper name, and in so doing violate the rights of everyone who is not a Christian.

The People have the right of free exercise; Congress does not. UG, IGWT and erecting the Ten Commandments is a violation in that they serve to endorse a religious opinion by force of laws that govern ALL Americans. The First Amendment simply states that our government is obligated to be secular, and officially have NO opinion with regard to religion.

Starting today, more to see if this fad catches on, then really to rebel, I will be taking a Sharpie marker and crossing out In God We Trust on all my money.

Who's with me?

that's such a useless thing to even complain about.

Who fucking cares. The world is found upon religion.

Get used to it. It's not hurting anyone having that on the currency is it?

... Oh dear. god is mentioned on something . Oh my gosh! Someone call me a whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaambulanc e and get me a cheese burger with french CRIES.

For people from a suposed free country you sure all do whine a lot about people's religious beliefs

Congratulations on winning the "Completely Missing the Point Award".

Who is whinning about anyone's religious beliefs? God is not mentioned, is says we trust in him, says we are a nation under him. That's a bit more than a mention, it's a statement.

It offends me to have that on my currency, I in no way, shape or form want to be represented as a person associated in any way with Christianity or any of their beliefs, practices, or standards.
