not to sound cynical in the light of the tragedy, but that email sounds like another plot to harvest email addresses... masked in a "goodwill" sense. i could be completely wrong.. i'll support established firefighting organizations just fine, but i get random spams every day promising me a 12 foot cock to a million bucks a week, to foreign nationals asking me for money and in return i will save thousands of their people or some shit..

This is very ture, but if this IS very real, then I think its worth the possibility of a few spam emails...

But like I said, do what you feel you want to

Well like it said in the email

"When this reaches 250 emails, mail back"

If this was a harverster, dont you think he would have asked for a little bit bigger number? Granted, he could have 500 of these emails going out, which in turn would be 125k emails, but still, Thats a shit load of work to do...

cynical nothing, that is exactly what it is, and it frightens me that people that are supposed to be in tune with scams like this would be so gullible to not see right thru this bullshit.

the assholes that try to take advantage of a national tragedy in this manner

It's real:

http://urbanlegends.about.com/librar...refighters.htm

Comments: While we are still of the opinion that email petitions are inadvisable and mostly useless (for a variety of practical reasons), we're obliged to report that this one is not only sincere and authentic in origin, but may even have a shot at accomplishing its goal.

The New York Post confirmed in its November 15, 2001 issue that Connor Geraghty, the 14-year-old son of NYC Fire Department Battalion Chief Edward Geraghty, who died in the rescue effort after the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, launched the petition to honor his father and other firefighters who have lost their lives at Ground Zero.

Don't forget to light that candle!

Update: As of March 2002, readers are reporting that Connor Geraghty's AOL email box is intermittently full and bouncing messages.

think of how it will split. each person will send it to seperate people, which in turn will send it to seperate people. it's like an MLM scheme. when each thread hits ~ 250, they'll forward it back. you won't only get 250, you'll get thousands, because of the many different directions it will go.

too bad this sounds like it may be legit or something. sigh. if i want to help i'll send $25 to the firefighter foundation, not my email address to who knows where.

this is about the most pointless e-mail petition I have ever heard of. Petitions can only be signed by registered voters, and that means registered in the USA, so sending 350 million names would do nothing to sway politicians, as they have no way of knowing whether ot not this meets the wishes of their constituents
