How to get into WorldCup

Ok.. so I get it.. here in CostaRica soccer is huge.. Im still trying to grasp that I probably wont get any NFL until I bring in a huge ass dish... so I figure I should at least try to get into it...

But honestly.. it seems so slowww. And the games during the day obviously Im working so cant really drink (err.. too much)

So whats the best way to get into it? Suggestions?

not really sure. It is pretty slow. In the US, it is popular as a kids game because it is not very complicated.

I would try harder to get the NFL. Soccer really only gets attention once every four years or how ever often they have the world cup.

Doesn't help that you're working...

Have a dozen beers in a loud bar with everyone there cheering for your team, and you'll get into it

The world cup is the king but believe me it goes on all year round every year in the club competitions as well

You need someone to explain you tactics, it's like a non-american trying to learn American football, you can't get it from the beginning, it's not only about how many goals they score or how many fouls they make...Try watching it with some friends who know the game, you'll get into it, it's beautiful, there are 3 billion people loving it.

Not really, every plays involves intracate strategy, personal changes and possible scores. In soccer, alot of the time is spent in no mans land with very few opportunities to score. There is relatively no strategy, so it is pretty much just sit and wait.

Soccer never stops except a few weeks in summer when there is world cup/other major cups. and during those weeks, most clubs are on tour milking money

It's still slow though for the viewer to watch.

Play happens, runs half a yard, stops. Sit and wait 3 mins.

Soccer although while not always seeming to be attacking, you have to watch defending aswell even with the ball, because being caught in posession could cost you a goal...

For the record, i don't want this thread to turn into another Football vs Soccer thread, there's been enough of them on her the last few weeks.

At least you are willing to try soccer out for a bit, which is probably wise since you are in Costa Rica...

Not only strategy, but a big part of it is the caliber of athletes. The size, speed and power of the guys in the NFL make each play amazing. There is no other sport that combines those talents.

You have obviously never been around football players. Rugby players try out to be punters in the NFL all the time.

If you put an NFL linebacker in a rugby game, he would litterally kill people. No arm tackling in the NFL.

No Im not saying its football vs. futebol at all, Im a sports person.. so I'll give it a try etc.. & no would I knock it, some people dont like some things.. if I dont like it, it'll be because I gave it a try & it just wasnt for me.. but I gave it a try.

--
& for the 3 sec stoppage.. I dont notice that I guess.. having played & coached Im always thinking "whats next" etc.. so I dont see the 3 seconds etc...I played soccer down here once & even watching.. half the guys seem to play while the other half are walkin around trying to remind thier teammates they are there.. like some said its the stratagy I guess I gotta figure out etc... I'll get some ticos to explain it more
