It was called the Soho Roll initially then took on the name of California Roll when craze died out here

Nah I do not believe you. Nobody is silly enough to name a raw fish item with the ho word in it, let alone so ho.

Elixir 06-09-2006 11:04 AM

In 1966, Mr. Nakajima opened the Kawafuku Restaurant in the Little Tokyo area of Los Angeles, the first to serve Edomae-sushi in the U.S.

Mr. Nakajima is the primary sushi pioneer in the U.S. Though Kawafuku - and other early restaurants - targeted Japanese immigrants, it was actually Japanese businessmen that first frequented the sushi bar. The businessmen would bring their American clients to experience Japanese sushi, and this inadvertent marketing success helped quickly expand the American desire for raw sushi.

Kawafuku's Chef Saito became the first American-based sushi chef, and his wife its waitress. In four short years Mr. and Mrs. Saito earned $30,000 - a small fortune. They returned to Japan and opened a gorgeous sushi bar in Ginza, Japan. As word spread that there were good business opportunities abroad, scores of young chefs frustrated with the rigid protocol of the Japanese sushi industry begin leaving for U.S. sushi bars.

Our search for more information of these pioneers continues, if you have any historical information about Kawafuku or its chefs in the 1960s, please email us and help us complete this story for future generations.

Side-note.. Tony from NatNet is the BEST person to get sushi with, he knows all the best stuff to order and is some sort of sushi connoisseur.

Babagirls 06-09-2006 11:30 AM

hmm never tried it. but i think tassy was right about the sushi peer pressure thing, sushi eaters are always trying to convert non-sushi eaters.

We can cuddle.

Actually I am a terrible peson to drive around. Hell I freak the hell out when others drive all the time and that is not in a big city.

laura 06-09-2006 11:50 AM

i was in Japan a few weeks ago at the busiest fish market in the world in Tokyo and ate the freshest most awesome tuna sushi at 9 am

it melted in your mouth
we ate some weird fucking food over there... mainly because you cant read the fucking menu

we also ate Fugu, pufferfish.....yeah the stuff that is poisonous if cut wrong.
we waited til the last night of the trip because i didnt want to die on vacation. The raw fugu was kind of rubbery and bland, the cooked was yummy.

there are a lot of sushi bars in Japan with the conveyor belt going around the restaurant and you grab what you like (or recognize LOL)

OG LennyT 06-09-2006 11:52 AM

I eat it socially thats it

quiet 06-09-2006 11:53 AM

i LOVE sushi, but it has to be fresh. i steer clear of those cheap all you can eat places. and it better be a japanese chef preparing it.

Mr. Romance 06-09-2006 11:53 AM

Love it and it sucks here in Uruguay.... the best i can get is in Buenos Aires and is not that good there either; however, the beef here in Uruguay is the best in the world!

Two reasons:

1. It tastes great.

2. It's healthier than the shit you gobble.
