Sure, that's true. But it doesn't stop people from crying about things like "OH MY GOD IMPEACH BUSH" -- it'd matter just about the same.

Those rooting for the terrorists are easy to spot -- and karma is a bitch.

Bottom line Tony... yea agree, it won't make a difference, tho he does appear to have been very active if the stuff attributed to him is accurate.

Call em al-Qaeda or whatever, there are plenty more of a similar frame of mind out there - and not necessarily connected to what is known as al-Qaeda.

Here's another update via BBC...

Quote:

Zarqawi killed in Iraq air raid

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has announced that militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been killed.

"Today we have managed to put an end to Zarqawi," Mr Maliki said, sparking sustained applause.

The Jordanian-born leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq was considered the figurehead of the Sunni insurgency. Reports say he was killed in an air raid near Baquba.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq has been blamed for scores of bombings that have killed hundreds of Shias and US forces.

The head of US-led forces in Iraq, General George Casey, said Zarqawi's body was identified through fingerprints and facial recognition.

Zarqawi has also been accused of leading the rash of kidnappings and beheadings of foreign workers.

Unconfirmed reports suggested he was seen on one video posted on the internet personally cutting off the head of one hostage.

Mr Maliki said intelligence from Iraqi people had helped track down Zarqawi, who had a $25m price on his head.

"What happened today is a result of co-operation for which we have been asking from our masses and the citizens of our country," he said.

The prime minister urged Iraqis to join politcal dialogue rather than violence, vowing to "carry on on the same path... by killing all the terrorists".

The BBC's Ian Pannell in Baghdad says this will be seen as a major victory for the new Iraqi government and US forces but it remains to be seen what effect, if any, it has on the ongoing violence and death rate in the country.

yeah, in march 2005 they were 100% sure (They even had dna evidence :) ) that Zarquawi had been killed in Fallujah...

Paul Markham 06-08-2006 02:00 AM

Will another guy just step into his shoes, he becomes a martyr and the insurgents recruit more terrorists?

If history teaches us anything it teaches us this. Defeating terrorism is not done with a gun.

A country that celebrates it's Independence day and it's revolutionaries, should know this.

Damian_Maxcash 06-08-2006 02:19 AM

Christ - we didnt actually win something did we?

Joking aside - its good news - now if we could just catch the freakishly tall arab guy who jumps up and down on our tv screens once a month we might get some credability back.

Very true!

Can't think of any "terrorist" group who were defeated that way....

It's not quite the same, but not too far back in time when the Russians tried to invade Afghanistan. They suffered considerable casualties and went home. It's been like that for many centuries in that region of the world (and elsewhere) - and sure as hell, it will be no different now.

Then we got the IRA sitting down at a conference table :pimp

There will be the usual haggling over "lay down your arms" stuff and 20 false starts on that - plus a few sessions of "giving up violence", then bin Laden (or his "replacements") will end up at a conference table after decades of more of the same shit.

Seriously... re the IRA... it's amazing some of the same people who blew shit up and killed folks are now "respectable" to a degree and leaders within the "community".

PS.. One of their damned bombs nearly got me... got that blast of hot air :1orglaugh

There were no deaths from that blast tho - was mean't for a forces recreation center.

In my previous life I was a nurse - yes they let me loose on 'nearly' dead people.

I was working on the day that the IRA bombed Canary Wharf - I ended up looking after a women who was 8 months pregnant and was knocked over by the blast.

I remember she said to me "But I havnt even been to Ireland" - My job was to look after her - but what could I say? - 'Sorry love, but I dont think they care about that"

Greg B 06-08-2006 03:27 AM

This story is weird. Some wire services are reporting true, others aren't. Just cause ABC News said it was so, duddn't mean so. Let's wait another 12-24 hours for confirm.

If true, I hope that cowardly piece of shit suffered a lingering death for what he did to those innocent people. I hope when the bombs hit one of the bombs hit a shipping crate full of U.S. canned meat spam that splattered all over him and he died with pig leavenings all over him.

Fuck him and good riddence.

Well, i am against Bush politics. And it is not good that al-Zarqawi dead. My country was occupied too, and if i would have had gun, i would do same what he did... God Bless al-Zarqawi. Real terrorist is George Bush, just he doing not with his hands.

if you dont like bush go there and fucking kill him, dont coward attack a nation, they dont got balls to ask for a real war, so all they do are coward attacks to normal eople that just want to work.
al-qaeda sucks, terrorism sucks, i hope bush kill every single one of these fuckers.

The BBC has been reporting it as fact since the Iraqi president confirmed it.

Al-Zarqawi's body was taken to a secure location, visually identified by "scars and tattoos consistent with what had been reported and what we knew about him," and by fingerprints, Caldwell said. "We have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Zarqawi was in the house. It was 100 percent identification."

its going to be funny when it turns out this was a 90 yr old womans body

OK, someone tell me what the deal is with the framed and matted photo of him at the press conference. Is someone planning on hanging that in their living room?

Dammit Damian - I thought they prefered to keep people called Damian away from nearly dead people? :1orglaugh

Seriously - I remember the Canary Wharf bombing well. What you told that lady is 100% - they don't care about harming/killing people. Their "cause" is more relevant to them. OR... let's put it this way, it's prob more accuarate to say they may actually care, but the importance of striking for max damage on behalf of the "cause" supercedes all else.

That stuff can usually leave a "mark" on folks (don't mean literally), but just the lasting impressions - you got one of em "marks"? :pimp

From the bombing I was in - I'll always rememeber one small incident which lasted only about 5 seconds. The bomb had just gone off - was on the entrance to an army recreational center. It blew a few cars and smashed some windows etc, but seemed to be planted "in the open" so the blast was never actually contained and this prob lessened the damage.

Anyways.. suspected at the time it was another IRA bomb and stood up and looked towards the explosion source and a little guy comes running from the general explosion area, smiles on the way by and mutters, kinda by way of a greeting, "They are at it again.." - in a strong Irish accent :winkwink: Always wondered about him and if he was either a bomber or a lookout. Police and backup were there very quickly and recording all movements/activity in surrounding streets so chances are he's on tape anyways.

Oddly.. can't say I hate anyone cos of that shit - Ya can't hate a nation because of the nasty scum it breeds. In fact, I actually got a liking for Irish folks. :)

ROFL! The video of those two 500lb bombs hittin' his crib is funny! How he wasn't blown apart is beyond me. Enough of his ass was left to positively visually identify him.

But, it proves you can run, but you can't hide.
