FALSE. I think you would actually get better mileage with more rim and less tire..

how would that fuck up the speedometer?

Bigger rims = Bigger rotational mass = inaccuarate mph guage.
Also, if you're getting a thinner tire size, you're ride will be a little rough, depending on tire size.

Same Dimension on rims and tyre = no difference
But usually people go for larger and wider rims, which will in some cases change the pivot point of the wheels, might even have to put in spacers to make them fit. This will move center of gravity away from the center of the car, putting a bigger stress on the Bearings and suspension in general = chance of breakdown when pressed hard (like cornering in high speed - do you really want your front wheel to break off while doing 80mph in a corner? )

Find a BMW experienced tuner(custom builder (or what you call it in english), and talk to him - order your gear there, fuck it if it cost you a extra $100 to buy it from him - its your life and your car that is at stake

Yes it changes the rate at which the wheel spins relative to your actual speed. There is an equation that they can do to figure out the proper size for a new speedometer gear if its an older car. With newer electronic speed sensors there is sometimes a gear also. If not you may be able to get the computer in the car adjusted so your speed is showing correctly.

It doesnt fuck up a BMW, dont worry. For your 3 series, 17'' would be perfect, dont go over it.

ah i see, that makes sense. I assumed that if youre going to replace your rims youd do it the right way :|

For a 3.0i engine, maybe...not for 2.5i But I wouldnt get more than 18'' even for the strongest 3 series engine.

btw when you open the driver's door, you can see there the recommended sizes of rims and tires. If you go for one of them, you are safe.

this is correct ...when you change the overall size of the tire the speedometer will be off and the difference will increase with speed. it will also effect your mileage ...

and the rougher ride is just an effect of having less rubber between you and the road ...

I had these Hamann PG2's on my old M3.

they are great rims. Didnt stiffen up the ride too much. Actually it almost felt like my ride was better.

As long as the diameter of the tire is the same, and in most cases they will be.Check with tirerack.com, your speedometer reading will remain the same.
The M3 I had came with 19's and I bought some 18's for winter rims.I like the feel of the 18's better. They were lighter to steer and made the car a lot easier to toss around. For normal day to day driving,I'd be surprised if you felt any difference in the handling.

the more rotational mass depends on weight. and if you keep the overall tire diameter the same by getting larger wheels with a lower profile tire it shouldn't change your spedo.

Where do you people come up with this. The speedo will be off at higher speeds and depending on your sidewall your ride will be a little rougher. Depending on your motor and the weight of the wheels you may have a small loss in performance. Big fucking deal.

Putting bigger wheels on your car can cause some serious damage if not done correctly. You'll defiantly need to upgrade your brakes. It will put more stress on your steering, transmission and suspension. And your gauges will be inaccurate unless you have them calibrated. Not to mention that it may affect your warranty.

It will put more stress on your steering, transmission and suspension. And your gauges will be inaccurate unless you have them calibrated. Not to mention that it may affect your warranty.

Wow, this thread is full of stupid info.

One a "Rim" is jsut one small part of the wheels, only older trucks and some cars had wheels were the rim was a seperate peice.

If you dont change the overall height of the wheel/tire then your speedo will be the same.
if you get a larger wheel then your tire sidewall gets smaller, this WILL effect ride, you are alowing less flex in the tire befor the suspension needs to come into play.

Your milage WILL go down if the wheel/tire combo is heavier, this will also cause your car to have slower acceloration, and longer braking distances.
Your cornering should get better, less sidewall to flex means the tire stays more in contact with the road.

if you get wider but same overall hieght, its the same as above, only thing that will change is traction will be better, milage will be worse, and stopping can be better.
You just have to get the proper offset wheel to make sure there is no rubbing.

technically its the more weight that causes the slower acceleration and longer braking distances. But light strong wheels are not cheap at all.

And most importantly on a 3 series BMW you will probably never be able to notice the slower acceleration or increased braking distance with a 19X9 or smaller wheel.

The tires make a huge difference too, dont go cheap on them.

Yes it does but who cares, let the person you sell the car down the road worry about it. You worked hard for it enjoy it.

                                                      bah spelling owns me.

Just go to a shop that deals with BMW point to the wheel you like and they will help you with everything else.

Generally when you have less sidewall the gap between the tire and the fender looks larger, so lots of people opt to lower the car too, this will make the whole car look better, but on a BMW this is not cheap to do properly.

Good luck, ps go to www.bimmerforums.com and look in the wheels section, and post up your questions there.

I have a 3 with 18's...just get a nice 35 series tire, it will be a little rough, but the speedo is pretty close. The TQ will be less, mostly cause of weight. It does put alot of stress on your brakes was well as tire ends.
