News: ICANN .XXX decision appeal

ICM Registry Inc is appealing the ICAAN decision to turn down its proposal to make a dot XXX domain for porn sites.

And so confident is ICM that it'll win the battle that it's already hired staff and built the system and is, "taking reservations now would mean a quicker rollout should the appeal succeed," says the Associated Press, going on:

"ICM isn't charging sites to lay claims to a '.xxx' name based on what they already have under '.com' or another suffix. The company plans to eventually charge $60 to register each name if its bid is approved."

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) last month rejected on ICM's proposal to create .xxx for voluntary use by online porn companies.

A, "divided Icann board ultimately voted nine to five against the establishment of the .xxx domain. The decision predictably elicited criticism from several quarters," observed Canadian Net expert professor Michael Geist/.

"Many Icann watchers noted that the function of the organisation was to address technical internet issues in an independent manner," he went on.

"However, this decision appeared to be based on political considerations with near-obvious intervention from the US government."

America, "which funded the Internet's early development and delegated authority over domain names to ICANN," retains veto power over ICANN decisions, says AP, adding:

"ICANN had postponed making a final decision on '.xxx' in August after the Commerce Department stepped in to underscore objections it had received.

But "we've got deep pockets," the story has ICM's Stuart Lawley declaring. "We're very determined."
