Hyundai Sonata clocked at 147MPH by speed cams... eh..WTF?

Quote:
The new speed record clocked last month by photo enforcement cameras along Loop 101 in Scottsdale ? at 147 mph ? is 16 mph more than the one set by an unknown motorcyclist on Feb. 14.

Police say Lawrence Pargo, 26, of Goodyear was photographed in a Hyundai Sonata traveling at speeds ranging from 102 mph to 147 mph on four occasions between 5:47 and 6:20 a.m.
http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=66898

Holy Shit! Up is down, down is up.. and Hyundais are approaching 150MPH! I find this as odd... and funny

Tires are rated for speed which they can safely hit without blowing up from the force/heat generated.

why do you think that corvettes, vipers, ferraris, etc all come with wide tires? (not to mention race cars) because there is a much larger contact patch which allows more contact with the road adding to its stability at higher speeds. there is a reason that they dont make z-rated pizza-cutter tires.

no shit sherlock?

believe me THE SIZE has nothing to do if it will handle the speed or not.

wider tires may have more traction and grip but they even produce more heat

But the rubber compound they use is also better and able to handle the added stress of going that fast.

1. actually size DOES have something to do with it. tires that size (hyundai sonata) have a much larger sidewall (taller), which is nowhere near as strong as a reinforceable lower profile. this is why they are NOT rated for those speeds; it is an inherantly weaker tire. this, again, is why high-speed, performance tires (like the z-rated) are not available in those sizes.

2. when cornering at high speeds (like in a 147MPH "emergency maneuver"), thinner tires with higher sidewalls can "roll" off of the rim or even blow its sidewall out.

so, yes, tire size DOES have something to do with it; physics has alot to do with that. if you still dont believe me, ask anyone that knows cars, tires, or has been on an auto racing team.

Drag racing is a whole other story and completely different. here's why:

1. drag racing involves going in a straight line (no turning), so they aren't concerned with side roll. the reason the drag slicks have a huge flexible sidewall is so the sidewall can "wrinkle" (compensate for the massive amount of torque being produced) thus increasing traction and reducing axle and frame flex; see pic below. also, with these applications, the tires are actually riveted into the rims themselves so the wheel doesn't just blow the tire clean off (look closely at the edge of the rims in the pics).

2. we are talking about a vehicle with radial tires, not racing slicks, that is doing 147MPH on the street, so at some point cornering will come into play. therefor you cannot apply the same rules on tires that you would with a straight line drag race, because different forces are going to be acting upon the sidewall of the radials.

cornering is not going to be an issue at 147mph on a highway unless it's some freaky highway with alot of twists and turns

I dunno about any major "cornering" on a highway, but what about other vehicles? Unless he was the only car on the road, it's a pretty good bet that he at least had to change lanes at high speeds.

ok found it...not as high as i was thinking, but still respectable;

"The Sonata GL V6 and GLS V6 come standard with a 3.3L, DOHC 24-valve V6 engine with 235 horsepower. With an aluminum alloy cylinder block, continuously variable valve timing and multi-point fuel injection, a lively performance is guaranteed."

Theoretically it can go 193mph with its gearing.
According to Car and Driver it hits 137mph top speed and it is drag limited.
It comes with V rated tires which are good upto 149mph
