Should I cut the shrubs/trees away from the front of my cottage? pic

what do you think - should I cut the shrubs/trees away from the front of my cottage?

I'm thinking it would look better without them?

thoughts?

The ones not againt the house are staying - just the ones up against the house touching the house.

Yeah, you gotta do something though like a hedge to block the concrete foundation you got there.

Take them out and plant new ones, you need some symmetry.

I'm thinking of cutting down the two tall trees int he back that look 1/2 dead now too. I suppose that's a lot of work as I'm not sure if there's a service around here that will do it for me.

God I hope there is a service here for that........ I don't wana have to do this myself.. I can just see Jman and I killing ourselves and crashing the tree onto the house if we have to do it.....

OK, now understand I'm 1. Lazy and 2. I like plants.

I wouldn't cut them. I have some that I didn't even realize were growing until I saw a picture from 5 yeas ago (duh) that I'm eventually going to have to trim in order to see out my kitchen window, but I like letting everything grow wild.

Wig from WTS is Mr. "Cut the tree, trim the hedges, sod the yard, prune the bushes" and cries every time he comes to my house. He finally told me a few weeks ago to just spray roundup on all my "grass" <------ (read: weeds where grass should be) and I did ;)

Vegetation in the form of bushes, flowers and the like very close to the house invite rodents and bugs. Best to have a barrier all around the house of pea-gravel or river-rock or least a foot wide. Wider is even better. Under the rock apply some material to stop weeds from growing up through the rock. You can edge with bricks or whatever to make a nice presentation.

If you want bushes just make the zone of stone wider and plant the bushes well away from the house itself.

I would get rid of those 2 plants I see right up against the house.. Make up some new planting bed or whatever and space them so they wont grow into the house after a few years.

maybe you can leave them and just plant some new ones to go along with them. The one on the left side of steps looks like a keeper.

I'd just pave the yard and paint it green. Low maintenance for quite some time.

I was going to say leave it but put more plants and bushes with it along the front to balance it out but since you are goning to put in a deck in the next year just leave it until then and once the deck is finished put in a garden or planters then. A few plants and flowers just make it look more cared for and lived in

Is that a crepe myrtle that's flowering? I didn't think they were hardy enough for that far north.

Cut down or trim any bushes and trees that are in contact with or growing towards the house. Check out Curb Appeal on HGTV.com for landscaping ideas that will increase the value of the house.
