Symantec Says Its Own AV Product Has Zero-Day Vulnerability
The security vendor says its enterprise anti-virus product line has an unpatched, "zero-day" vulnerability that can be used by attackers to hijack systems. By Gregg Keizer TechWeb.com May 26, 2006 03:59 PM Symantec acknowledged on Friday that its enterprise anti-virus product line has an unpatched, "zero-day" vulnerability that can be used by attackers to hijack systems. "Symantec Antivirus is susceptible to a remote code-execution vulnerability. This issue allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM-level privileges, facilitating the complete compromise of affected computers," the company said in an alert Friday to customers of its own DeepSight Threat Management System. Thursday, security vendor eEye Digital released a preliminary alert that said Symantec AntiVirus 10.x and Symantec Client Security 3.x included a remotely-exploitable vulnerability that could be attacked via a network-style worm which wouldn't require any user interaction to compromise a computer. I have used Norton ever since I began and never had a problem..Just dumped them because their software kept asking for user id and had to keep reinstalling and kept sucking resources.they had a good product

really i have found nortons to be rather useless. it sucks back the resources and always seems to miss the most obvious virii..
Several times i have helped local people get rid of virii and they all had nortons , and not once did it ever find any of them , and some of them were well known obvious virii, seems rather silly.. I dont run any virus protection , never have.. theres uses for firewalls , but most virus detection is either overcumbersome or useless. I like www.antivirus.com online free check , just do that once in awhile and you will be fine ( infact in each of the aforementioned infections , antivirus.com always found the virus ( although couldnt entirely clean it , but none usually can fully clean them , you usually have to get the last files manually.)
