What exactly is Ransomware?

I don't think I've heard that term before today in reference to EpicJim's stuff. What exactly is it and who is doing it?

Its something that is not good for our industry period. Any sponsor that has a tie to it should cut it out asap.

Thanks. This is the key entry in that article?

Commercial tactics
Unfortunately, at least one commercial company employs tactics that some perceive as reminiscent of ransomware. Victims complain that MoviePass.tv (also known as MovieLand.com and MediaPipe) installs itself without their knowledge and displays intrusive pop-ups demanding a $99 licensing fee.

So which sponsors use this? Thats what I want to know. I really hope any sponsor that is involved with this gets out now. Its just wrong.

I think originally it was a similar to a trojan that once installed would encrypt some files on your HD and then you'd be asked to pay in order to have those files restored.

Now days I think it's different (as mentioned in the posts above).
