Been on the other end and purchased ads...and I see good reason for a slowdown, alot of very poor deals, low quality placements etc (not saying that about yours at all - dont know it - but it might slowly send customers in other directions)

Just add it into an Iframe, this way if they don't load your site won't be affected. Take a look at break.com, all the adbrite ads are Iframed.
