Dell Laptops? Are they any good? I need advice!

I'm in the market for a new laptop and for price and support it looks like Dell is the way to go.

I made the mistake of telling my dad I was looking for a new laptop and he's really sold on dell and would be dissapointed if I bought anything else. So on that note can you tell me what your experinces with Dell Laptops have been? I would like you to recomend me how much horsepower do I really need.

I plan on doing all my webmaster duties on it (Dreamwiever, Photoshopcs, WS FTP, Arles Webpage generator, Sony Vegas etc) and well as surfing, my pictures, watching movies , my ipod and instant messaging.

What would be a good model top go with? Where would be a good place to buy it? Any hidden tips, tricks that I should know about? What are dell coupond that I have heard about? I would really like to hear your feedback?

Inspiron E1405 kinda caught my eye! I like the smaller screen.

dell is the best value for the $$$ but personally i loved every IBM laptop i ever had just better built machines.

IBM sold thier laptop division but the new owner hasnot changed anything yet that should affect quality.

I bought a dell laptop about 8 months ago and its been great. I went with the inspiron 9300, 17 inch widescreen. My only gripe was the widescreen its taken some getting used to. But I use every program you mentioned and my laptop performs better than anything I've owned before. I originally wanted one with a little more performance but opted for 1.6GHz processor and 1 gig ram because I called the number on their website and they offered me a $700 discount for this model. Apparently they run deals all the time and when I called they had something with the qvc channel so I got lucky. I'd recommend this thing to anyone.

Sleeves,

I really do appriacte your reply. Im still not sure what model to get. Your set up seems like what Im after. So there was a small problem with the qvc channel and you got a deal?

No there wasn't any problem, it was pure luck on my part. I was on their form and about to order my laptop when I called and asked a question about delivery. They were very helpful, I told them what I wanted and they offered a slightly less expensive model because they had some special going with the qvc channel. So I opted for a little less performance but I still got to choose all of my software and warranty etc.. I told the guy something very similar to what you posted about using Photoshop and dream weaver simultaneously and he assured me that I'd be satisfied. I don't have a single complaint, the performance is great on this thing, not a single problem anywhere. This was my first widescreen though and it took some getting used to but now I really like it. I'm not a big tech guy and don't know what computers are better than others but this dell has been everything I wanted.

I just got the 17 incher today. The only gripe I have is that the screen really sucks. I didn't notice but I got the wvga(I think that's what it's called) and it's like looking at one of those old school projection tv's.

Needless to say, I will be calling them to upgrade to the other monitor. So if you are going to do it, get the pricer monitor. And to be honest I don't know how that one looks either.

To be honest I dont even know what screen I have. I didnt have that option when I ordered it. In my display properties it says "ati mobility radeon x300". I have no idea what that means if anything. Its crystal clear, the problem I had when I first got this thing was I never looked at a widescreen computer before. Doing work is great but surfing the net sucked until I downloaded a window resizer and adjusted the font size.

so let's say for example, if you push down the monitor, backwards, is it hard as hell, and light to see the monitor? I had a sony viao and that thing was crystal clear. no matter what angle you looked at it.

I just adjusted the screen to different angles and the colors stayed the same the entire time. The screen never got lighter, when I pushed it back the navy blue got a little darker but the font stayed crystal clear. If you can tell me where to look I'll check and see what screen I have.

I had a gateway before and it was ok but know I changed to IBM and I really love this machine, the design is superb and it runs like a devil. Dell computers are good too. Personally I didn`t have any previous experience with them but from what I heard they give a lot of features per $$$

My firts laptop was DELL (Pentium processor 133 MHG and 1,42Gb hard disc) I still have it and I think I will never sell it! It still works great! Overall I think that Dell is the best, so go for it!!!

I'm sold on Asus.
When you compare machines side by side, dell laptops are more expensive, have elss grunt, are heavier, and have less build quality.

I'm not saying they're terrible, I'm saying that you have to pay a considerable amount more to get something faster, lighter and better built.

Try having a look in the asus range and seeing if they have something tjat you'd like :D

I have the Inspiron 9300 1.73 Ghz 1GB Ram 80 GB HD. I upgraded the video card to the NVIDIA GO GeForce 6800. I am happy with the results.

I think there are 2 monitors to choose from: WXGA+ (1440 x 900) or UltraSharpTM WUXGA with TrueLifeTM (1920 x 1200).

I have the WXGA. I looked at the Ultra sharp but the screen was too glossy for me and reflected every light in the room. Still a super nice screen though.

Try this section of dell: http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineS...lob=INSP&s=dfh

A while back, I had a dell inspiron for over 6 years. It had some wear and tear, but still worked. Old technology LCD screen was a bit dim, but only 1 dead pixel after 6 years. Hopefully now they've made them brighter with the same lasting quality.

I currently have a gateway. I got it basically because of the standard specs and price, left off the bells and whistles. Works fine, screen is VERY bright. Extended battery is good on the long flights. No complaints.

I love my Dell laptop and desktop computers but I hate the service from Dell.

My motherboard on my Desktop fucked up two weeks ago due to a power surge and it cost me $700 to get fixed because Dell wouldn't sell me the part. I had to send it to them and have their guys install it due to the fact every part is custom made.

I'd think about that before buying one buddy.

dells support is great as long as you speak indian. i hate dell for more reasons then i can list in one thread. but thats my main gripe.

i have always had toshiba laptops, untill i got my new sony vaio. which is probably all i will ever buy from now on. strong machine, and bomb proof. and thier support is pretty good.
