David Blaine - One crazy guy...

I assume you have all heard about this:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp..._magician_dc_3

He's up there right now. Here are some pics taken earlier:
http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/...&c=news_photos

The guy impresses me, but I still think he's fucking nuts.

I read an article about him in last month's Rolling Stone. He's psycho. He was saying how for his final stunt, he wants to be shot - with a real bullet from a real gun. He wants to be shot in the shoulder, have it knock him over, stand up, pull the bullet out and throw it on the ground, and then walk away.

Apparently it's this type of death wish he seems to have that caused Josie Maran to break up with him.

He's dated all sorts of hotties, btw... Supermodels seem to have a thing for him.

I saw it, but they were very careful to say that's how he *COULD* have done it, and not how he DID do it... Personally, I think they are full of crap. I think he did it. It was in public view the whole time... and sure it would be tough, but it's not impossible.

Magic not for faint-hearted

MAGICIAN David Blaine performed such a horrific, gory illusion at a taping of Carson Daly's late-night show, NBC is considering canceling the segment. "Oh God, it was so gross - David pulled his beating heart out of his chest, put it back in, and then collapsed," said one spy at the Wednesday taping. "He had to be carried off the stage by some helpers. Some girls in the audience ran out crying and screaming, while Carson just stood there stunned and they blacked out the stage." Blaine further irked network execs by pulling a vanishing act as soon as his bit was over. "They couldn't find him anywhere," one Blaine pal said. "They were ticked off that he just went missing - they were worried about him." A network spokeswoman denied the segment would be killed: "I haven't got any word of cancellation, so it should air May 21 at 1:35 a.m." Meanwhile, Blaine is preparing for his next stunt: standing for 35 hours atop a 100-foot column in Bryant Park on the same day the Carson episode is set to air.
That would be cool to see

I saw the Carson Daly thing too (that's what made me start this thread, actually). The heart trick was pretty good. Basically, after he collapsed, with Carson looking truly shocked, they cut to commercial. When they came back, the camera was panned way back and some producer thanked thee audience for coming out and that was it. No Carson, no David to be seen. There was some scattered applause, and then the show was over.

They did show a "no performers were harmed blah blah blah" during the closing credits, but that was it. You could tell some of the audience members were really freaked out.

He rules. Watch his show tonight and see for yourself.

Trust me try this and you'll realize how lame it really is, but if you do it right at the right angle it looks pretty good. At the bottom is an explanation of how Blaine did it for his TV show.

The Balducci effect:
EFFECT: SELF LEVITATION

Step 1

Face away from the people who you are going to perform the trick to. Make sure
there no one standing in front of you or at the sides. The audience has to be
behind you.

Step 2

Take one and a half steps out in front of you and turn yourself clockwise to a
two 'o' clock position.

Step 3

Make sure your feet are together, bend your knees slightly.

Step 4

Slowly lift your left foot up so you a balancing on the ball of your foot, at
the same time slowly lift your right foot up right off the ground. Make sure
that you lift up your right foot the same time as your left foot.
If done correctly it will look like (from the audience view) your levitating of
the ground.

TIPS :

This trick requires practice, to help you perform this trick correctly try and
practice in front of the mirror. You have to make sure that the distance between
you and the audience is correct otherwise they will see the tip of your left
foot. Also make sure that the angle is correct as well otherwise someone might
see your left foot.

Having the correct footwear is very important with this trick. You can't wear
any shoes that have a heel. Trainers are OK to wear but they must be flat. The
best footwear is to have either dark flat shoes or trainers with dark trousers
(pants).

When you start to lift of the ground slowly raise both arms up also lower your
arms when you lower yourself.

"David Blaine performs two types of levitation tricks in his T.V special. The first trick he performs is called The Balducci Levitation trick. This trick is easy to perform but it does require some practice. The other trick David performs is when you see both of his feet lift off the ground about a foot high off the ground. This trick was achieved by using very thin wires which are not visible on TV The people watching him do the levitation trick were actually watching him do the The Balducci Levitation trick. The video was edited together so it looked like the people were watching David lift a foot off ground!"

He was on one of the morning shows over here last year and came off as a complete ass. The interviewer started the interiew and was asking questions and he wouldn't answer. He just stared at the interviewer and put his hand up that had some 'protection' symbol on it. When the interviewer asked him what it was about he again didn't answer. It was a five minute interview and he wouldn't say a word. His people booked him there..if he didn't want to do it then don't show up.

Some of the stuff he does is impressive, but unfortunately he uses careful camera tricks and editing to achieve his results. Ever see the trick where he asks a volunteer to write the name of a loved one on a piece of paper? The volunteer does so (he is several feet away with his back turned) and folds the paper. David Blaine then returns to the volunteer, asks what the name the volunteer wrote, sets fire the the paper, and stubs it out on his arm. He then rolls back his sleeve to reveal the name of said loved one already written on his arm.

What you don't see is the first half of the trick - he asks the volunteer to write the name of the loved one on the "center" of the piece of paper (while his back is turned), fold it up and hand it to him. When he has the paper in his hand he asks if the volunteer "wrote in block capitals or not?". Whatever the volunteer says, he replies "no, I need you to write the other way for the trick to work", and rips up the paper with the name written on it. What he actually does is just tear off the ends of the paper and palms the center piece of paper (remember he told them to write in the center of the paper?). He then asks the volunteer to write the same name again on a different piece of paper while he takes a few steps away with his back turned . While the volunteer is rewriting the name, he looks at the first piece of paper that he has palmed, finds out what the name is, and writes the name on his arm with a piece of charcoal. THIS is the point where they start to show the trick.

If you want to see some real illusions, go and see Penn and Teller...

Damn, the show just got over a short while ago, it was pretty impressive how he was up there so damn long. I wasn't too impressed with the ending though, they had 6 layers of boxes all tied together so they wouldn't blow out, then on top, they put up some blankets, so when he fell onto the blankets, they kinda helped catch him in a sense. STILL, being up there for 34 hours, that's messed up, I wouldn't have been able to do that.

I got a kick outta when he took that girls watch off and put it inside that store window, then reached through the window to get it, you have to wonder how the fuck he does that.

heheh.. penn and teller are cool..

I met Penn at an Adult Expo in Vegas back in '96 (I think '96). He was kind of a jerk I thought at the time but I was drinking a bit (!) and looking back on it might have been a jerk myself, lol.

I think I know how he does most of the stuff, but it's still pretty cool. He's a great performer. I actually enjoy the illusions that I don't know how he does the best.

I got a kick outta when he took that girls watch off and put it inside that store window, then reached through the window to get it, you have to wonder how the fuck he does that.
It's based loosly on an old card trick where a guy takes a playing card and places it onto a piece of glass which is framed.
He then passes a pencil thru the card and thru the glass. When he removes the card the glass is solid.

The way it works is that the card when slide onto the glass releases a small latch that allows the glass to travel up about an inch (under the card) If the glass is completely clean you don't detect that it slid up. There is a hole in the glass that is now revealed (but hidden by the card) the magician now easily passes the pencil thru.

As he's removing the card the glass is sliding in place.

Didn't you notice how he held the newspaper up for a long time before reaching in? And that the newspaper wasn't just barely big enough for his hand? It was a whole sheet of newspaper that when held up to the window went all the way to the left edge of the store front. Also after he pulled the watch back thru, he held the paper there for a while. At which point you could actually see ripples in the glass moving to the left.
Then he removes the newspaper, and points to solid glass. The retarded spectators/plants were completely floored by it.
LAME.
