Social Networking Bill - 18+ Only - Will it pass?

There is a new Bill just proposed stating that all Social Networking sites must remove and therefore no longer admit members under the age of 18 years old.

This Bill would cripple sites like Myspace for sure.

    What do you think?
    Will it pass?

You'll just end up with hundread of thousands 12 years old saying they are 18... ending up chatting with 18-20 year old guys...

Eh, I think it's good and bad. Why not have 2 sections of places like myspace. Restrict one part to 18+ and the other to people under 18. This way a 13 year old couldn't be connected with a 24 year old. I think it would work.

Hm, didn't Yahoo try that with its chat rooms?

This application is screaming for a .kids extension...

I don't think it would ever happen. Only way to enforce such a thing would be to make people verify they're 18+ (with a credit card I'd assume), in which case, almost all social networks would be crippled.

Wouldn't it suck if they begn enforcing the national ID card and made all social networking sites verify these cards to confirm the ages of its members.....

Didn't think about that now did yas...

                      The groundwork is being laid..

I don't know if this is the bill you are talking about, but I was looking over the "delete onlie predators act" It basically bans all forum & blog access from any library or school because the defination of social networking sites are so broad. No way this will hold up in court.

If a "national ID" allowed adults to easily access adult content it would be a great thing for all involved in mature content websites. By "easily" I mean they would be able to simply enter their ID# and a card ID# such as appears on the back of credit cards to verify at a site. That would prevent someone from randomly guessing a working number.

There was a bill a while back that proposed adding magnetic strips to driver's licenses in every US state within 5 years so that a strip reader could be easily attached to computers and verify age that way.

It's all bullshit and it's all useless. Let them waste their time.

This is nothing but the digital version of kids digging out Dad's Hustlers or 23 year olds hanging out in the high school parking lots with "badass rides" picking up young girls.

People are people are people. Always have been...always will be.

WG is right, and with Bush's biometric ID cards for "legal immigrants" we are just getting one step closer to national ID cards for everyone. And won't it be nice when you are driving home from a night out that cop behind you that's looking for a reason to pull you over can ID you by your tag and look up every CC transaction you made at the bars that night and decides to give you a DUI test. Nice. Gotta love the NSA.

I came up with this idea standing in line to get into Internext back in 2003 (I think) while talking to brand0n.

If you are going to be paranoid, start taking a closer look at the 9-1-1 emergency system. That was their way of getting into your homes, and have you be glad about it.

It's all bullshit and it's all useless. Let them waste their time.

This is nothing but the digital version of kids digging out Dad's Hustlers or 23 year olds hanging out in the high school parking lots with "badass rides" picking up young girls.

People are people are people. Always have been...always will be.

Actually they are already on the back of Texas DL. Bars are using the readers to check for fake ID's. It's a good thing for the bar owners here. If they take a fake out of state ID even if its a ringer the bar owner is still liable and the courts don't care. Cost about $3500 a pop.

And won't it be nice when you are driving home from a night out that cop behind you that's looking for a reason to pull you over can ID you by your tag and look up every CC transaction you made at the bars that night and decides to give you a DUI test. Nice. Gotta love the NSA.

Dear God. Censoring half the Internet because of a couple isolated incidents is fucking insane. I'd much rather have my kid on MySpace than at some party with drugs and alcohol. I'd much rather my kid be IMng friends than at a mall unsupervised with predators.

Read through the bill guys, it's really scary. It is so vague that they can literally ban all e-mail, IM, message board, social site on the web.

This is no solution to the problem. The problem is our government not going after online predators and punishing them. I hear on the news about sex offenders getting out and re-offending all the time. Make some fucking tough punishments and quit with the slaps on the wrist.

Another novel idea, EDUCATION. Why not teach kids about the dangers of the net? Why not tell kids what happens? Let them hear the stories of what has happened. Shit, when I saw a video about what happens when you drive without a seat belt, I have worn mine ever since. All this does is push predators to different areas to get their victims. Education and tougher punishments is how you stop this shit.
